I need help!! we bought a baby RINGNECK parakeet he's brilliant at flying apart from he's major CLUMSY! Flown into walls, Windows, curtain poles, our only option was to have him clipped until he's trained and hand tamed and for his own safety!!!

We took him to our vets and I'm SCARED he's clipped him wrong![emoji30] he's clipped his secondary flight feathers?!? Is this correct. I've been reading online and getting mixed reviews on it..
Please help me

Only the primary flight feathers should be clipped and I was just about to tell you not to get him clipped and to keep him in his cage for a few days until he is used to your home.

we've had him over a week now, he's just frantic because the previous owner never let him out of the cage.

He's never been out of the cage before our house, it's not that he's not used to it, it's the fact he gets that excited and frantic hell fly into things. I've done a lot of research and we believe it is the best option for him, we don't want a dead parakeet due to an injury ..

Thats what im saying he has never been out of a cage in his life so he doesn't know how to fly around your house because he has never been in it.He is also probably scared because he doesn't know you and is in a strange new place.

He won't even let us go near him, if we do he panics and flys off and bangs into things, it isn't fair on him banging into things, researching it for a couple of days we decided it was the best option for him, for 'safety' purposes a lot of research has said its in the best interest for house held parrot/parakeet for their wings to be clipped

When we clip, we do just do the primary feathers. However, they will grow back. You mentioned he was a baby, how old is he? Had he already fledged?
We all have to do what we feel is best for our babies.

Terry yes he can fly, he flies really really well and lands really well, after talking to our vet he even agreed it was for the best, we don't want a dead RINGNECK because of frantic flying. I'm glad they will grow back, he has been a lot calmer since we have had them done, and he is happy to 'step up' and stay on they stick for a long time and sit nearer to us then he did before. He'll happily sit on the arm of the sofa and edge nearer to me by himself where as before he would just fly round frantically and land on top of curtain poles.

I believe and my vet believed it was in his best interest .. If not I think he'd of been dead soon.

He's about 4 month old

if he is in the cage he cant fly into things he wont let you go near him because he is scared and doesn't know you so he should be safe in his cage and just speak to him and let him get used to your voice but now that he is clipped let him come out himself.

Mango I'm not keeping him in the cage 24/7, not a chance. We've done what we believe has been in the best interest of the bird, he's a lot calmer, calmer round us and will come close to us now. He's already been clipped so it doesn't really matter how much you tell me not to do it, it's been done.. Me, my partner and vet believed it was on the best interest for him

I have also had birds that I was terrified they would kill themselves by running into walls.Perhaps this will give you a chance to bond with him without that worry.

Now your not reading my posts lol I said to let him out and let him come out on his own but if he steps on the perch bring him out like that.

Exactly my point terry!!! We want him to bond with us, we want him to get used to us and not be afraid and be happy and be able to come near us without flying off in a scare hurting himself

Because everytime he came out he came out on his own we didn't use the perch because he wouldn't let us.

Since being clipped he lets us use the perch, he'll 'step up' happily sit on the perch for a long period, sit on the arm of the sofa and get closer and closer to us each time ...

If he wasn't clipped he still could have bonded to you without being hurt by getting used to his surroundings and the people living in the house and then being able to come out on his own and learn step up.

By being clipped he basically doesn't have a choice because he knows he cant fly away.

He can still fly.. All his feathers haven't been took [emoji1360] he just can't get the height to go to the top of the curtain poles anymore.
