Wing clip...

I called my vet for a price on just a nail trim as he already had his 6 month physical & I was told that every time the bird comes in it has to have a full physical, thus a nail trim is $65.00. So I've been doing it myself now and am switching to yearly physicals.

MikeyTN, Well I don't live in Tennessee.

In Sioux Falls, SD where I used to live, not super far from Minneapolis. The shop do it for $12 up there. Just gotta shop around. I love Minneapolis!!! Been there many times...one of my best friend lives there.

My 2 Napes need wing trims now I'm just going to have my ex-hubby hold them for me so I won't end up paying anything. Yes, I used to work in Minneapolis, it is about 15 minutes from where I live.

two things i do from a very early age is handle my birds wings and touch their feet...not just at clipping time and filing time. ALl the time. we do the "oh look at your beautiful wings...aren't they sooooo beautiful..." while they are on the play area and I can use one hand to gently extend the wing. (during clipping time my scissors would be in my other hand!) this way my Alex's are very accepting of having their wings touched and snip snip...it's done! Also we "hold hands" when we go outside where I have my thumb over their foot to hold them to my hand.
I initially had my breeder show me EXACTLY how much and which feathers to clip when i got them as babies and now it is soooo easy. i couldnt imagine paying someone to do it! So maybe you just need that initial "example". keep handling your birds wings as much as he will tolerate, just to make the whole proceedure less stressful!

we trained mylah to allow us to do it my husband holds her wing out and i clip them, then give her a piece of bicky she just sits there no problems and with her nails we file them with a nail file emery board she just thinks its a game

Yep mine freak out as well if anyone else tries to clip them I do it myself and frankly have always done it myself . I also do their beaks and their nails as well and honestly I have never had a problem doing that .

Unclipped is really a different ball game. lol They can fly into windows, walls. They can fly to a forbidden spot, when you turn your back. (woodwork you would rather not be chewed) Merlin follows me from room to room. I think he is happier & healthier unclipped. But you just have to weigh what is right for you.

My parrots have done all the same things fully clipped. I don't clip anymore. Whats the point of paying for it, putting them through it, only to have them do the same things they have always done. ;)

True!Pearl has decided to jump to the door(its a glass door) and luckily I caught her. Multiple times. When we got Pearl the breeder showed us what feathers to clip and what not to clip and explained in detail but I'm still to chicken haha. We can touch her feet and she doesn't like for us to touch her wings but she tolerates it. Is it worth a try clipping them myself next time?

When i took my new bird in for her check up i took the other two since it was time for them to go in another 3 weeks. Just for the grooming nails, beak, on 3 and wings on two was just $63. Not to bad i didn't think. I normaly do my own wings and file the nails but i don't trim them. My cockatoo screams out OUCH!!!! every nail and it just kills me but all my birds are trained to give me their wings for trims and they hang on the side of the cage to get filed.

I've just kind of been thinking...I might let her go fully flighted. She listens to me(well as much as a baby bird can:)) She also hates her wings being spread out lol.I tried and she kept struggling. I didn't wanna hurt her so I didn't even really put any effort into it. I'm thinking about it.

I have to say, I am really taken back by some of these prices. Paying $60+ for a wing and/or nail clip seems excessive.

I am lucky, in that having been a zookeeper, I was taught how to do both so I can do it for my own bird...and second, Nic Nic would likely let anyone of you all do it to him. He that lad back and very accepting of being handled by others.

When I need to clip his wing, I place him on my lap and lift each wing up, open it and clip what needs to be clipped. Nails are much the same, I usually just file them a couple of nights a week to keep the points off. While he is on my lap, I lift his toes, one at a time and file away.

All birds are different, but if you take your time and introduce it to your bird slowly, I would think they could eventually become accustomed to it.
