Phillip - Green Cheek Conure (RIP)
I'm new here, so if this post doesn't go here I apologize.

I was wondering if budgies will eat mealworms. We have a small mealworm farm and feed them to our chickens, but will budgies eat them? If so, would it be beneficial for them? They are a good source of protein, but I need to know if they can eat them or not.

Parrots eat fruits, vegetables and nuts. There are a number of vegetables such as avocados that are deadly to Conures. I suggest that you get a food guide for your pet. Hopefully others will add their knowledge. My Conure eats pellets, Nutraberries and veggies.

I know conures don't, but I was talking about budgies. To my knowledge budgies need some sort of protein in their diet right?

I wouldn't feed my budgies (or any of my birds) mealworms, or any other kind of worm/bug/creepy crawly.

The protein budgies need come from plants. Breeding budgies can be given boiled egg as well. Meal worms are not a good source of protein for budgies.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

For what it's worth...
On two occasions over the years, I have found remnants (a leg, half of a head) of crickets in the Rb's cage in the morning...

Well maybe I need to take back my answer! I had not heard of parrots eating bugs and I would be concerned about the bacteria. I'll have to look into it more...

Amy ( obviously NOT a budgie ) will eat grubs when she's outside walking along the grass..it actually looks like she seeks them out lol.
She has never had any ill affect from them. I think Beebs would RUN in the opposite direction...the little scardie cat that he is.

I would be extremely careful feeding a budgie mealworms, not because they don't eat bugs in the wild, they do, but mealworms have a very hard chitlin shell that will absolutely cause impactions in a budgie. They have different digestive systems than chickens and those mealworm chitlin shells have been known to kill parrots, reptiles, small animals like rats and hamsters, etc. because they cannot properly digest them, then they become completely impacted.
