Where should I put the cage?

Hey everyone!

I am getting a Greenwing Macaw this summer, and we can't decide where should we put the cage.

I read that the cage should be placed in the most frequently used room in the house.
It is our living room/kitchen (they are not separated). We can place the cage there, but we have a big room right next to the living room, and we don't use it for anything. It is just for storing things. So if we clean that room up, we could make a bird room, with lots of space, toys, etc.

The only problem is that the breeder and every book said that the bird must be placed in the most frequently used room in the house. Of course the bird would be out as soon as I get home every day, and we'll build a stand in the living room/kitchen.

Is it a good idea to use the "useless" room for the bird's room?

I would place the cage in the "useless" room rather than in the living room/kitchen.
Sounds like a lovely place for your bird, once all cleaned up.

The kitchen is not a safe place for any birds, due to Teflon-coated and other non-stick cookware can produce fumes that are highly toxic to birds.

As long as your bird is able to see and interact with family members the bird will be happy.
:grey:

Can the bird see you from the unused room? If yes put the cage there. Once the stand is set up, the bird will only be using the cage for sleeping or when no one is home anyway. At night that will be perfect for him.

The problem is that it won't be able to see us from that room.

But you are right, if we are home, the bird will be out anyways.

Thank you for the help. :)

Yes, you can use the currently "useless" room. LOL, that sounds funny. When your bird is in the cage while you are at work, you can turn a radio on for him/her, and when you are home, take him/her out and place him on the playstand for the rest of the day.

I would put the playstand in the living room. :)

I think my Catalina Macaw is so well behaved [because she is in our living room] where we are all the time. I have a stand in the kitchen [where she eats dinner with us] and watches me do dishes. On her cage I put toys on top and on the sides where she climbs all over. I think shes content just always being able to be a part of us :)

I would use the useless room you can make it his little room with lots of toys! Also fumes from some things you may cook or cook with can be very toxic to birds so its best not to have his cage right by the kitchen!
