Where can I find a travel crate?

What a beautiful boy! What is his name? And you are such a good mom getting his eye looked at. I have a giant GW, too and love him to pieces. He's like a giant oaf. Research macaw travel carrier online. They make them with bars and a perch rather than plastic like the dog carriers. I have them for my macaws for hurricane evacuation. If you buy one, find out what the metal is. And please do not patronize King's Cages. They poisoned my sweet little BFA by selling toys with zinc and can't be trusted. I just saw one on mysafebirdstore - not sure if it is big enough.

Sorry. I can't help you there. My GW travel crate is my shoulder, but I can definitely relate to the work you are doing...

the car is an Impala. It has a roomy back seat but the door doesn't open as wide as I need it to sometimes

I am thinking your cheapest bet (that might be strong enough) would be a metal dog crate
(as long as you didn't leave him unattended, I know he could beak through it but you would be talking to him and watching him)

It might also solve your getting the door open, you might be able to get it in the back seat flat and then open it up to sit on the seat, and add a perch to it

BTW, I did read of some people trimming the tail feathers to make it a bit easier to transport, I've never done that, would that be bad ?

PETCO has:

30"L x 21"W x 24"H ON SALE for $50.99 with free shipping
OR
36"L X 24"W X 27"H ON SALE for $55.99 with free shipping
(just measure your back seat and decide)

They call it a "Folding Dog Crate"

The good thing about PETCO is you can return it to the store !!

There are others with thicker metal that cost more

Midwest Lifestages Double Door Fold & Carry Crates - Midwest Dog Crates and Collapsible Dog Crates from petco.com

Hope this helps!!

Question - are you wanting to put Sebastian in a travel cage for safety reasons? Will he be a poor passenger if he rides on your soldier and interfere with your driving?

Bless your kind heart. These darling rescues go through so much. I've been a supporter of Foster Parrots for many years and I've learned of their plight. I was just wondering if you could protect the back seat with a blanket and rig some kind of barricade to keep Sebastian back there.

You never want to be driving with a bird not in a carrier as you are taking a humongous chance of serious chance of injury let alone death if you should have an accident. Yes, it looks 'cute' but you would never allow your kids to be crawling all over you and not in a seat belt and you should never be distracted from your number one job at the time: DRIVING.

You also don't want a really large carrier because if there is an accident the bird will be knocked off balance at least and what is the first things birds do if they are falling? Spread their wings. So, you want a carrier big enough for them yet one that will limit somewhat the wing span. Don't worry about the tail, it will get curved but a shower will fix that one easily.

For the birds that use that can opener attached to the front of their faces, you don't want a carrier with the holes punched in the sides as the bird will modifiy it to their liking. VariKennel used to make a great one but then the company was bought out and that was the end of production of that one.

I had come across one that is made in Italy with the wire grate windows but you can hardly find them around anymore and the few out there have really risen in price. I just bought a spare because Kalea modified her carrier that I can still use for now but wanted another one of these because it doesn't seem like you can find ones without the plastic holes punched in.

Check out Kings aluminium travel cages - their large should be big enough I think! :)

R-
I knew she would come across the King's travel cage in her research. I have two for hurricane evacuation. But I'm asking/warning parrents not to buy from King's Cages. My little BFA died from zinc poisoning from one of their toys. Andrew King has refused to take it off the market even though I sent him the test results proving the toy bell she chewed contained zinc. I know aluminum is safe for birds, but the King family is not. Sincerely, Sheryl

How about a cardboard carrier? I saw them for cats and dogs and little birds on the internet. I also saw a DIY. Right price anyway.

Hello Sheryl,

Cardboard probably wont work for LiL_Caity, she started the thread by saying she put the Giant Macaw in a plastic dog crate which he promptly chewed apart

The fact that it is a 2 hour ride is the problem here, at least with a metal dog crate if the bird starts to beak it she has time time to pull over and give the bird some attention (or possibly talk to him, or give him a treat)

Ive been following this because I need one for my milligold. I don't like the dog crate idea because if they're stressed they can bite you easily when you get the crate out.
I almost bought a kings cage but sheesh now I won't.

Sooo there is this cage. It's ridiculously expensive but now I'm wondering if it's the way to go. After all they live forever lol.

Didn't see the price, very nice (If you take a LARGE bird with you ever day)

I love the one "built" to the owners SUV size with the door that opens in the front

Not worth the cost if you only needed it once or once a year :(

Not sure I like the ones made of acrylic sheeting, might get too hot in the summer

Love that carrier, but is a little on the pricey side but if you can afford it, do it.

Did you find a carrier?
I wanted the biggest available option, too. I brought a huge metal one home, only to find I couldn't get it through the door of my car.
Then I wen to a bird meeting and seen what others have done with their macaws. Their tails just bent slightly in pretty small carriers. They were using maybe a medium dog crate. I still wanted larger, so I got a large dog crate, instead of and extra large.
My guy isn't a chewer. I just drilled a hoe and put a perch and a soft toy. He actually likes his. He think it's his nest. Getting him in can be tough. He's quick to get out, but once he is in it's all good.
I travel short distances with him, but prefer to have him in the carrier, or at least have it with me for long distances.
