When do Macaws Start to really talk

Salsa says quite bit. He's about 4 years old and his first owner was a close friend of mine who recently passed away. This is his second home and he more or less came pre-loaded :p

Among the words and phrases Salsa says are:

Salsa (his name)
Hi
Hello (he yells it sometimes and he'll say it softly when I shake hands with him - ie, his foot, my hand)
Gooood birrrrrd!
Who's a GOOD bird?
Am I a good bird?
Be a good bird
Are you a good bird?
What a good bird!
Eagle birrrrrrrrrrd! (usually while spreading his wings)
I love you (often after making kissy noises)
OW! (repeated over and over)
Go Cubs, Go! (as a rally cry and also at times as a question with an
upward inflection)
Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!
Up up!
Right now! (usually after saying "Up up!" and tapping his beak on a hard surface or his foot-fist on the perch)
Who's there? (after tapping his beak several times on a hard surface to make a knocking sound - sometimes it sounds like "who d'ere")
I wonder who it could be?
Who's that?
Wooo! (as well as various "woo woo's" and "who hoo's")
C'mere! (and if you don't do it he starts saying it in an emotional whiney voice as a child would)
Uh-oh! (appropriately after he drops something - or I drop something - or one of the other birds drops something)
Too loud! (after one of my other birds screams - and sometimes after he, himself screams)
Papa/where's papa?/where's da papa?
The papa
What?
Heyyy! (he says it as if he's surprised, with inflection as if to mean "I didn't expect that... that's really cool!")
Look at that
Oh bird
What's your name?
Big bird
Hello bird
Now? (upward inflection)
Take a bath? (upward inflection - sometimes followed by "Now?")
An apple? (upward inflection - sometimes followed by "Now?")
How are you?
Oh-kay
Is it me?
Why?
No! No! No!
Hurry up!

Other things Salsa mimics:

He laughs a couple of different ways (one of them is an hysterical belly laugh)
He mimics a perfect yappy little dog barking (sounds exactly like a dog)
He burps quite well
He hums the Andy Griffith theme song (and can whistle part of it)
He wolf whistles (I actually taught him that)
He mimics a really great human cough (sounds exactly like a person coughing)
He mimics someone's violent sneeze

Zaffer can say several things but usually doesn't talk much. When he gets in the right mood he'll chat away though. He came pre-loaded as well. I rescued him from being boarded at a vet clinic in 2005. He was there for 1 year after his owner had passed away.

Among the things Zaf says, are:

I love you
How are you?
Cool! (I taught him that)
C'mere
Step up
No! No!
Pretty bird
Hello
Hi (he whispers it too)

Jack only says "hello".

Maynard doesn't say a thing. But he screams brilliantly! ;)

Wow, Salsa can really say a lot! Thats very impressive!
It really is... I've continued to be impressed every day since he came to live with me! He's really a riot to watch, too!

I just noticed you have multiple macaws (duh)...I have a BG, I am looking to add another macaw so mine can have a friend. Which macaw does your Blue and Gold get along with the best? Do you think a GW or Scarlet too large to be friends with a BG?

Well, my B&G and my Military had a bond for many years. But when I got my Hy, my Military decided to start attacking my B&G (who still really loves my Military). That situation has been sustained for about 7 years now. I have their cages next to one another and they interact through the bars... but Maynard will try and seriously hurt Jack if they are placed together. So the situation is a bit peculiar. They're both wild caught Macaws and I've had them for a very long time. I've thought about getting another B&G friend for Jack. I may do it but I haven't fully decided. I already have lots to deal with as things are.

Currently I'm working on getting Salsa and Zaf to become friends. That started off fairly well but Salsa went and scared poor Zaf off by constantly leaping on me. Gotta have plenty of patience with these guys and their changing preferences. And even still, things don't always work out as hoped.

Oh, I forgot to comment on your above question... Salsa used to live with a B&G and they got along very well.

And just a note: Scarlets are typically smaller than GWs.

I think members of any separate species of the larger Macaws may turn out to get along well together. But I also think that any separate species of the larger Macaws (or even members within the same species) may not get along well together. Sometimes, however, they can be conditioned to get along with one another when they don't seem to initially. You just can't be sure unless you try it. And it could take a while in some cases.

I neglected to mention that Salsa often combines parts of the things within his vocabulary. Like this morning he was saying "Heyyy... look at that!" in response to something he was watching on TV, and then "Wayyy too loud!" in response to random Macaw screaming. He seems to mix the words and phrases very appropriately most of the time.

Remington is a GW and 15 years old, here is a list of what he says
hello
hello there
give me a kiss(kiss sounds too)
knock it off, you hear me
get in there
no, no, no
i see you
come here
good morning
what's up

that's all I can think of right now~ he does sing a song, but I can't tell yet what it is!

Get in there? Lol just a bit suspicous jk

haha, yes that is what I tell him when it is time to get back in the cage~ its better than what we tell the dogs... "go to jail"...hehe I'm just waiting for him to repeat that one!
also add to the list- thank you!

MAC, our 2.5 yr old B&G talks some.

We never counted the words but it's enough to keep us entertained.

He doesn't say much in front of strangers.

He laughs and does the woohoo thing!

If he is given something he really likes he'll go "wow"
