Hello, I've decided I'm going to build an aviary and I'm not sure what wood to use. I know it needs to be treated and but without pesticides or herbicides, but I don't know what type to use. I would prefer one that lasts long and isn't easily chewed. Any ideas on what wood to use?

Sorry no good on the wood but can I ask you to delete 2 of your 3 posts as duplicating is not allowed on the forums, thanks.

Wood and Aviary are rarely used in the sentence. The only one I recall seeing, starts with: Never use .......

Yes, there are some treated woods available that are 'said' to be safe, but I have not seen any of them pass California testing. So, as a general statement, there are no 'treated' woods available that are safe to use. FYI: Big Box and Lumber Store treated woods (the most commonly use) are deadly to Parrots and Children. Boutique Wood Stores 'may' have so called 'safe' treated wood, but it will be extremely expensive if available in your State.

I use organic manzanita and pine perches I make myself. I feel they are safer than things from Chain. Oak would be good too.

The Pine has to be old and dry No sap.

Manzanita is the best. it is a strong hard wood with great shapes.

*Assuming the wood you are purchasing has not been treated with anything dangerous*
Maple, Birch, and Poplar are all bird safe and popular hardwoods. Pine and Fir are also safe for birds but are much softer. If your Bird is a very strong chewer I would lean towards using something like maple because it is a very hard wood. It might be overkill for a smaller bird though.

I would look through these sites for more info Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Parrots. Parrot cages.
