What rock does this woman live under?

@Getwozzy- That's 4 strikes for this store (one improperly tended cockatoo and 3 malnourished tortoises). I really wonder if they wouldn't be better off as a "pet supply store" that does not house or sell live animals?

@ Percysmom- But, but.... pinecone is his natural substrate to cuddle with and he would apparently be happier in a tree, in the rain subject to predators. But I hear ya loud and clear the you WANT the king of friskiness. But I don't want Percy taking the carrier out for a spin, he's not of legal age to drive, er, ride. I don't want him and Kiwi joyriding and hurting themselves:D

And so you know, it wasn't the one off comment (though that was the worse), it was a rather long thread she managed to just be nasty on. I know I've had to stick my foot in my mouth too a couple times because of certain subjects I am passionate on, but I don't know that I have ever been so rude and hypocritical to anyone for no good reason as this woman was. She managed to hint that my parents birds were malnourished and improperly cared for (all I did was mention my family and birds for 40 years, nothing any more detailed than that, and only to imply I understood some animal live a long time). She let onto the fact she is BREEDING her "rescue" tortoises as though she has somehow liberated them after stating how they are so frequently neglected and improperly treated (I wonder what she's doing with the babies, surely not selling them....:53:). And last but not least, said it is inhumane to keep them for long periods of time without rehoming them (I guess hoping she gets them so she can breed them). She was a real "female dog".

IMHO it seems they have gotten too big for their britches  they have recently opened a SECOND store (which also has a U2 in an even SMALLER cage than Sammy) I am just boiling mad over this right now- and I apologize for semi-hijacking your thread-

You better believe I'll be doing something about this!!!!!

What nonsense! A client of mine has an African tortoise who lives in her kitchen. She (the tortoise) is allowed to roam the house....but being a tortoise, she prefers to hang in the kitchen. Most of their movement in the wild is in search of food or mates. If food is around, they don't need to do laps around the block to be happy. They eat, sleep, sunbathe, and poop. She's had the tortoise for over 10 years, she's thriving. :)

A couple people PM'd me on the other forum, and said she is just really opinionated and doesn't always come across very nice.

It did get me thinking though, I hope I don't ever come across as rude and opinionated on here. I know there are certain subjects I am opinionated on:D I apologize if I ever have.....

@Getwozzy African Sulcata Tortoise! Those guys get up to 200 lbs and live to be 100 years. And they're the 3rd largest tortoise in the world. Also they are commonly the most discarded/disowned pet because people often buy them when they are the size of a quarter not knowing how big they get. We have 3 at the zoo I work at... but you definitely need a big yard for them...

Sorry... my Zoo Education Specialist side came out.... I love animals... haha

EDIT: Also since you mentioned that it's the pet store you aren't pleased with... these guys have obvious signs of malnutrition which can be noted by the high pyramiding on their scutes... sadness. Take one home! Save it!

That is what I had for a tortoise, my two was a leopard that I rescued from crappy conditions in a pet store and a red footed. They do grow big and in captivity they often grow faster than they should. The fresh produce really needs to be offered in moderation to these guys. Fresh grasses it suppose to be the main stain of their diet. Which is hard to provide in the winter. I use to provide dried hay to mine during the winter, but it's not the same.
Never mind proper lighting for them. We all know how people feel about avian lamps,I feel that way about reptile lamps. The bulbs need to be close to the tortoises to have any benefits. Heat lamps and basking lamps too. My sulcuta manage to rip a heat lamp down and started a small fire in the substrate.

I hope I don't ever come across
it's difficult on-line because you can't get any tone. Sometimes what people read isn't what the poster typed, or think they typed. Sometimes, too, it's not so much what you say, but how you say it. You can sort of say "no, don't get that pet, you haven't got the right environment for it" and people won't be upset by it. But say it the way the lady dog did and you'll annoy people, big-time.
