What Kind of Person Are You?

Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
Through researching and being on all of these different forums, I have noticed a pattern.

Around 80% of people that own birds seem to have one type.

1. They have Budgies, Cockatiels, Parrotlets, and/or Lovebirds.
2. They have Cockatoos.
3. They have Amazons.
4. They have Macaws.
5. They have Poicephalus.
6. They have Conures.

It's striking, really. It seems that if someone has multiple birds, they are almost always one kind of bird. Usually they have different species, but the same type. For instance, if someone was a Macaw person, they have an Illiger's, a Hahn's, a B&G, and an RFM. If they are a Cockatoo person, they have a Goffin's, an Umbrella, and maybe a Molluccan.

Have you noticed this? Are you one of these people? If so, why? Is it because a person gets one species (i.e. Cockatoo) and decides they absolutely love their bird and they must have another? Or are certain people just good matches for certain types of birds?

(P.S. Hi, I'm really nosey and curious. ;) )

You forgot the Grays!

I have two CAG's and 1 Macaw. My goal was 1 CAG, 1 Band Gold and 1 Green Wing. It didn't work out that way lol. I'm still debating the 2nd Macaw.

Anyways, I can tell you that some people who have Macaws and Amazons may stay away from CAGS, TAGS and Too's because of the dust factor. I have my birds in the same room with an air filter, but I still worry about my Macaw developing a respiratory problem because of it. Eventually I'll probably seperate them just for peace of mind, maybe if I get a 2nd Macaw or Amazon or something non dusty I may put them in another room. I wouldn't do it now though, she's gotten use to the company I think. :)

You're completely right, I did forget the Greys! I actually just thought about that once I hit "submit!" LOL.

Excellent point! I didn't even think about the dust factor. I could see how that would be something to think about. Thanks! :)

I only have one green cheek conure. However, if I were to add another to my flock, it would be a green cheek as well. It's dangerous to keep green cheeks with bigger birds because they have a Nepoleon complex. They will go after a Macaw if they could. However, the Macaw could easily kill them in self defense. The safest bet is to keep green cheek conures with their own species, as they could easily injure smaller, less aggressive birds (e.g., parakeets, cockatiels).

PS: I Just want to say that I really admire all the thought and research you're putting into this = )

Whelp, I certainly don't fit your mold (so shocking! ) as I have both a Conure and a Cockatoo.

While I've always wanted a Goffin, if Sugar hadn't clicked with me, I wouldn't have gotten her. Same with Loki. I have both my birds because, for whatever reason, I was drawn enough to them to inquire and they were drawn enough to me to show that a bond could form. I don't know if I'd ever get another Too. We also had Grey's at one point, but Grey's don't seem to like me. We'd love to add a Macaw someday, a Hyacinth is our dream, but we know a Hyacinth will forever be out of our price range, so we're looking at other kinds of Macaws.

Thank you! :)

That's a very good point as well. I can see why someone that has multiple Budgies/Parrotlets/Lovebirds that are tame and have out of cage time daily wouldn't want a Macaw. Too dangerous, perhaps. Thanks for the input!

LOL so true, I knew you were going to say that! ;)

I see, I see. Interesting points.

P.S. Hey, didn't you see that thread about the affordable Hyacinths? I'm in contact with the people right now! $350 for two of them! So cheap! HAHAHAH. :D:D

Hubs says I'm predictable

And yes. I'm not drawn to birds because of what they are (although, in all honesty, that is a major reason I even looked at Sugar to begin with, I'll have to tell you that story someday), but "who" they were and how they were with/towards me. After the Grey's and the heartbreak there (lost one, rehomed another because she preferred my Active Duty Deploying Husband :( and wouldn't let me handle her at all) when we discussed getting birds again, we agreed that the birds had to be more my birds, that I had to be able to handle them, that we had to make every effort possible to get them to bond with me. So the fact that for quite a number of months, Hubs couldn't go near Loki while I could, secretly made me giddy :54:

and yes... I too was quite tempted to inquire about those Hyacinths ;)

She's totally joking. Jaimmorr is well aware that it's a sam.

I have two U2s both rescued but I got them because I was familiar with the U2s. Had one many years ago. What I find interesting is the training principals are basically the same but the knowledge of each bird has been so well updated. And then most of the birds were imported and wild much different than todays bred and hand fed birds.

Well I have a GCC and TAG so I guess I don't fit the mold either...lol
They both stay out of their cages all day so
I'm pretty lucky because they get along quite well. They don't play together but they don't fight either. They just kinda notice each other in passing : )

Oh, good. I was worried. :34:

My story starts from childhood:
Growing up I'd had budgies roaming freely around the house, and in retrospect I found them to be really amazing considering how little time I spent with them.

Whenever I get the urge to buy something, I normally wait till the urge goes away. But after a few years of wanting a parrot with no respite I decided to do some serious homework.
My all time favorite was and still is the Umbrella Cockatoo. (I hope corntoe won't mind me stealing this image of Bella)

I'd still love one to this day, but I worked out just wasn't realistic for me to look after one.

And so my search ended abruptly when I came across bluepearly03's Youtube videos.

I was hooked! It didn't take long for me to weigh up the positives and negatives and before I knew it, I had my Birdie. I've never looked back.
I'd better end the story there, or I'd go on for hours. :p

Well, I've got a senegal and two budgies.

I'd say I'm more a 'small bird' kinda person, would love to add a meyers to our flock, but not right now.

I do LOVE cockatoos, just don't have one atm.

Not sure where I'd slot in here ^^

I'm definitely a big bird person, but I have gone the nontraditional route as well. I have had most species of toos, a B and G and BF amazons. Most were fosters though and I always told the rescue organization that while I prefer the toos I would take whatever was in need at that time. We also have a lovebird that was inherited by my boyfriend from his kids when their mother didn't want it anymore. I would be concerned about the size difference of my two birds if my little one wasn't caged in a flight full time (she is not tame at all). I am a little concerned with the new too that we will be fostering since macaws do have issues with respiratory issues and bird dander. I tend to prefer the toos for their silly outgoing personalities and find that greys are not my "type" of bird at all. They are amazing birds, just not for me.

I guess we just like variety and we all have different personalities. My boyfriend is better with the big birds like macaws and greys, even tho "his" two birds are the quaker and B&G. Mine are the Grey and Lorikeet and our oldest has an amazon, with the younger ones having tiels.

I have had a spanish timbrado canary for three years whom I love dearly but hubby and I or really to be honest I decided I wanted a small parrot type bird and we fell in love with our little green quaker sweetie pie. as for the toos or greys I have a history of asthma so that let out the dusty birds and to be honest I would be intimidated by a very large beak. The quaker is the perfect fit for us I am still wiating for him to sing like Lucas but no luck so far. Alison and sweetie pie and lucas:D

Sadly, I have a budgie and cockatiel. We used to have a grey but he died :(
I'd like to have greys, macaws, tiels, toos, conures, budgies.... But I live with my mom and space is very limited. Surprisingly, she said I can get another bird, of any species, if/when I find a job. I was shocked  because she doesn't like birds.
