OK so me and my family are going to get a amazon parrot in about half a year!

My questions about amazon's are

What is your favourite amazon parrot?

What is the biggest and smallest amazon species?

Are Amazons bigger than African Grey Congo's?

What is the most coulor full amazon parrot type?

I know all Amazons are great talkers but what do you think is the best talker?

And, I know all amazons, if trained right can be very close to you, but what do you think is the most affectionate type?

I was thinking of getting a Double yellow headed Amazon, but my sisters want a yellow naped .

We have a Panama Amazon. She is an absolute sweetheart. I understand that the Panama's are the most calm and quieter, less hormonal of the Amazons. She is a second hand bird which we took in. She learns failry quick new words and phrases, we had some, dog barks, car alarms, different kind of laughs, a few swear words which I thought she was out of ear shot for, kids begging, etc etc. She is a cuddler, with my wife only, she never bit anyone, and is probably the gentles bird we have had the pleasure to live with up to date and we had Cockatiels many years ago.
As per colors, I am aware of Amazons mainly green bodies with some color variations on the head, wings, and tails. I always recommend you spend some time at the breeder, adoption center, and breeder before taking a bird home.... Most of the time the bird really chooses you, both ours did for sure.

Hey Zackster, best all around Amazon? Panama, hands down, cuddle bug, good talker,my favorite. There not as big ,not as colorful, but great pets, yellow shoulders are very similar.
Most colrful would be Magna DYH or maybe Tres Maria,Chaco Blue fronts. There are some color mutations that are quite stunning ,such as Blue Yellow Napes, but many are very pricey. Size wise,i have yellow napes from 435 grams up to about 750 grams(pretty big for a zon)i would say they are about the largest, and maybe some thing like a White front would be on the smaller end (of the more common zons) Talkers?Yellow Napes and Double Yellow Heads however the best talker i've every seen was a Panama. Most affectionate ? Panama ,however i have 2 hen YNs that are real cuddle bugs and my wife has a Male Red Lored who's pretty sweet(to her).I'm sure you'll get lots of different opinions from different folks but for a family pet get a Panama,a hen if you can,The best advice? go meet lots of different zons, find one that likes you.

awww great advice an i bet you are soo excited!!!

I like the Yellow Naped Amazons the best.
I have had 2 of them.
My favorite was my old parrot Perry who I had for over 10 years. I got him when he was about 1 year old.
He was sweet & very comical & a great talker.
When other people came to our house or if I took him somewhere he would get so excited that I could not handle him then or he would bite, 'tho that was not his usual behavior with me.
I now have Lila a much smaller female Yellow Nape who is also a great talker, but she was a rescue bird, so she really doesn't like to be handled. I don't know what happened to her where she lived previously. She has never bitten me, but she tries to discourage me picking her up, so I try to respect that. She is a very good talker & she sings & cries very realistically, but the singing & crying are when I am not in the room with her.
Both of my Yellow Napes would go through all the things that they could say when someone comes over I believe because of them being very excited. Even when the mail lady comes to put mail in my box Lila gets very excited & says a bunch of things & gets loud
I have fostered a Double Yellow Headed amazon who was a great talker but lunged at me & tried to bite me whenever I would get close to his cage.
All Amazons are not great talkers. If you do research on them you will be able to find out the ones which aren't.

My family has had three Amazons. We have had a Double Yellow Head Amazon (which is one of the very best Amazon talkers), a Mexican Red Head Amazon and a Guatamalean Meely, (which is one of the largest breeds of Amazons).

Most colorful is st Vincent. But you'll never get one. There not available in the trade yet.
Largest are mealys. Those are the most even tempered zon iv ever handled. At the shelter we have lots of blue fronts and yellow napes. Also dyh. There very typical for hormonal aggression and are most prone to it. Panama is the best overall amazons IMO. Never worked with one. But the big mealys can be huge. There weight ranges from 500 grams to 700. They are huge. The one I'm working with now is a big sweetheart. Heavy bird too. Heavier than any macaw iv held. Atleast feels heavier.
Talkin goes to the blue front also the yellow crown sub family.
I have a yellow crown and he's a giant cuddle bug. Crazy booger. But I love him tons.
Smallest zon would go to white fronts. There one of my favs too.
Mealy Amazon Parrots: Information and Photos. Here's a mealy link. Also use this site to research any species. But I agree. Panamas are the he's bet temperate wise.

Thanks!

I have been to a massive amount of breeders (about 17) and have seen 5 types of amazons (Double Yellow Headed, Yellow Napes, Panama, Blue Fronted, and the Orange Winged) I had fallen in love with a Double Yellow Headed and the Panama Baby. Both were from the same breeder and both were 3 weeks old raised together and both $1,500 with cage when fully weaned. Now I have to choose 1, I KNOW RIGHT 1 FROM THE CUTEST LITTLE THINGS IN THE WORLD! When the breeder showed me the 3 chicks i picked up the first one with was a Panama and it just didn't want to be handled by me at the time because I showed up at feeding time and that 1 chick was very hungry so I just put it down and the breeder, she said it was already booked. The next chick in the plastic tub was a double yellow headed and when i picked her up she went straight into cuddle mode and just wanted to be with me, when i put her down she tried to climb back onto my shirt and get to me. The last chick was another panama and was sitting on my lap while the breeder was telling me about amazons, then the baby Panama came to me while the breeder was feeding them, i was just holding one of the feeder things when it came to me for food, the breeder helped me gently feed the babies ( I have fed baby ring necks so she knew i could feed one of her babies) (she knows me as a personal friend, i have went and helped her care for her chicks) so now i just need to make a dissision............................................-_-................................ the worst part,
