he just did it so much in his cage, he nearly knocked himself off the perch.

He does not look stressed or anything.
I reckon his is just dancing and entertaining himself

I would like an explanation as well. My bird does it too. His actions make me think he is afraid of something going to attack him from above and there's nothing there. lol. This has been going on for 11 years.

My Yellow Nape's been doing this for 10+ years. I call it the "Stevie Wonder". She does it when excited and when she's feeling ornery. :)

Yeah, I as well call that the "Stevie Wonder" sway. While individuals of various parrot species may do it, I think it's most common among B&G Macaws for some reason. Some birds seem to do it when they're feeling a bit stressed or bored, and others may simply like the way it feels. My Jack (a B&G) also does it.

I know several Macaws who perform the stevie wonder, When performed the macaws are excited or just behaving in a way to let you know that all is well in their world. Your Macaw does not appear to be stressed.
The video was short so its hard to tell how your B&G feels about the fencing around their cage, do they perform the stevie wonder when the fence is down and away from the cage, if not, there is your answer. Best of luck Joe

I've seen conures do it too. No idea. Never seemed to be about anything bad.

yes, he does i when the gate is down and away too. thank you all! he doesnt seem in any way stressed , hes being friendly. this was just new to me and i wanted to make sure i wasnt ignoring some medical issues possibly. thank you again

My B&G macaw did that for a few days as well, I thought she was going crazy. I think she was bored without me around for a few days. She hasn't done it for a while. It's a unnerving to see them do it all the time.

My boy Yoshi does that when he is on top of his cage and dancing around , lol.
He does the head sawy , then runs as fast as he can to the other end of the cage and does it again , then runs the other way , lolol. He will even do the head swaying on his perch inside his cage. He's always a happy boy , so I never thought otherwise of it .
I have seen Stella do it as well when she is looking to come out and trying to get my attention...then she just hangs inside down and looks at me making silly noises :)
So , I would think its a happy dance , unless what Joe has pointed out about the baby gates being a issue with him...

Our greenwing & our cockatoo both do it & generally it seems the want attention. Our late-great Pionus did a version that looked a little angry. The Grey does a very stylized version . . . usually when he is a little aggravated.

But to me, it crosses species (and continents).

I am always amazed what Macaws and parrots in general come up with to entertain themselves and us along with them.
My Neleno loves to dance, he doesn't care where we are or what he might be standing on at time, when ever he hears music playing, It's Saturday Night Fever for my Neleno, step aside John Trivolta.
I was walking one day with Neleno and we were at a stop sign, while waiting for cars to pass, one car had stopped and the Driver had their music blasting with a lot of bass. My Neleno started his bobbing up and down, trying to walk side to side, everything and anything on his body was free game to shake and bounce, The Driver and I cracked up. So you never know what they will come up with. Thanks for sharing. Joe

I could just see Neleno dancing, lolol.

Birds do the funniest things :):):)
