What Bird Should I Get?

I'm new to bird-keeping and have looked everywhere for "quiet" birds, mostly because I have a house with high ceilings and am not very fond of screeches echoing into my ears. I've eliminated lovebirds, conures, and ringnecks. I'm looking into cockatiels more and more, but people seem to say they scream a lot too. Any parakeets (that aren't budgies)? I've considered rosey bourkes, but they fly a little too much and are a little to hard to train, as I've learned from other people's experiences. Help! :white1:

Look into parrotlets. They can’t scream. They certainly can make noise, but even at her loudest, Bumble is nothing like other birds volume-wise. They’re cute as heck and even though they’re small (don’t tell them) they’re all parrot!

Don't get a Patagonian Conure.

But seriously. good for you for researching and reaching out. Many just impulse-buy and then wind up rehoming their poor helpless bird.

Glad you found us!

Thank you! I have, and I was having a hard time deciding between cockatiels and parrotlets. (Though I would like a slightly larger bird... So I am on the cockatiels' side.) I'll take a trip to the bird store tomorrow and see for myself!

Consider getting a blue throated parakeet, they're mostly quiet throughout the entire day, at least mine is :)

Haha, I certainly will not be getting a conure any time soon. I never understood how loud they were (I owe too many people apologies for not believing them) until a teacher at my school brought her sun conure with her on Friday. And believe me, I will never re-home or give my animal a bad life, purely on my impulse purchasing.

I'm afraid they aren't too common where I live! I'll keep an eye out for them though, thanks :)

You can't compare a sun conure with a blue throat, it's not a fair comparison. Try to look into them a little bit more, their noise level is low, they're known for that. They're not like all the other conures. See if you can find a breeder in the US.

As I understand it, theres a big difference in noise between a pyrrhura conure and say an aratinga conure or a patagonian conure. My GCC is very quiet and mostly just talks or grunts...like people.

:gcc:

as others have said a sun conure is not the one to compare to Green cheeks or similar conures

Sun's despite their small size can go toe to toe with the big birds in a scream fest as I have seen before myself

you'd be surprised how quiet Green cheeks are, they have their moments of noise as all do but it's not too bad, still a bit screechy but not ear splitting. Cockatiels can have a scream mode though it's not too common. you'll be hard pressed to find birds quieter than Celestial's and Budgies though. Birds are well-known for their noise after all
