It's Griffin :D! He's 1 year old today...

My little boy Ruppell's parrot (Poicephalus).
He's not quite in adult colors... and just getting the yellow/orange 'socks'. He should have his full yellow shoulder patch by several years old. As a male, he'll be a mainly gray bird with yellow accents.

We're having a little party tonight lol. He's inviting his bff Raven and budgie Twigs... and although he doesn't like Robin (the old man Red Bellied parrot), and he doesn't like hubby Don, mom insisted that they be invited too LOL!

There will be party favors :)... Finger traps or wicker foot toys for everyone!

There will be healthy treats :)... Nutriberries, fruit/nut blend seed treats, freeze dried veggie treats, Higgins microwave in bag "Worldly Cuisine" African Sunset (quinoa blend with grains, nuts, cranberries, sweet potato, and more). Hope they like it. That's a lot of extra food on top of their normal diet.. they might wake up a bit heavier tomorrow :52:.

The humans might get to have some people snacks too :54:..

Pics coming :)

Ooooh that's so exciting! I can't wait to see pictures :D

HAPPY HATCHDAY GRIFFIN!!!

My Lucy and Gené are both turning 1 very soon (they're a month apart) so I may combine their hatchdate celebration into one. I have no idea what to do to celebrate though ):

Happy HAPPY Birthday, Griffin!!! :D Julieeeeee, we need a picture of the pretty birthday boy, please???? I know you said pics were coming, I'm just a wee bit impatient.

Please give Griffin snuggles from me, ok? :)

Sounds like an exciting party! Happy birthday to Griffin! I can't wait to see pics of the birthday bird:D

Sorry, been having some trouble with the phone camera. Here is the birthday boy! :)
I'll get more pics tonight with his friends if my camera lets me.

Oh, he is gorgeous! I've never actually seen a Ruppell's parrot before.

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! He's a handsome boy. And your pal Canelo sends a Happy Birthday too!

Happy 1st Hatchday, Griffin!!! You are such a handsome boy! Enjoy your party!

Julie, I love the photos! We need party pics too, please!

Julie, I had no idea Griffin was such a pretty boy! I love the soft scallops in his head-feathers. Please give him a big kiss from Auntie Trisha and tell him the Beaks and Dommie send their best wishes on the occasion of his birthday. XXXX

Griffin says thank you so much to everyone!! :)

He even thought Canelo was funny in the hat ;). I was actually thinking the other day, I wish the boys were able to wear tiny cone shaped party hats lol :D.

Party pics a little later!

Happy Birthday Griffin!!

Love those eyes, what a pretty color :) Happy birthday handsome boy!

Nice! That pic of Canelo is from last night. We went to our niece's 10th birthday, the them was Frozen and the kids insisted he wear a hat too, lol. We are going to celebrate Buddy's 25th birthday with mine, 3/21. We got him on 3/22/14 so we will share since that's when he joined us. I won't even try to put a hat on him. The only thing he won't cry or get scared of is food, lol. I'm looking forward to the party pics!

Wow Julie! He really has lost a lot of his yellow, and have his eyes changed color a bit too? He's loosing his "baby look" too now. I'm so interested to watch Griffin mature since he's kind of a rare bird. Raven too, I know he's loosing baby color too. So haw was Griffins little party? Did everyone get to rip up party hats and favors:D

Relaxing with his guests... (Raven hosted the party at his place)

Snacking on party treats

The host helping himself to the treat table... Birdie trail mix, cooked quinoa mix, dried veggie treats. They all liked the "trail mix" best. Poor Twigs, his beak is too small. Maybe he'll like the quinoa?

Yeah *sigh* he's losing his "baby face". He'll always have it to some extent, but his face was even cuter as a youngster. He has gotten a more mature head shape, brighter red eyes, bigger beak now.

I also can't wait to see his mature colors. He's the only Ruppell's I've seen in person, and the pics of mature ones look darker gray than him. Maybe it changes again, idk. He's also almost rid of the beautiful blue rump that only females and juveniles have. Raven has changed too, he is navy blue now!

So far no one's ripping into any toys yet...

Robin checking out some goodies too

One more of the birthday boy... Unfortunately, everyone is pretty sedate tonight for some reason. I guess they're having a 'mature' kind of party lol.

Here's a pic off the internet of a mature male Ruppell's in the wild. Darker and not as scalloped as Griffin. Usually the legs are more orange/yellow than this guy.

So... I might as well tell you what Griffin's birthday present is.

It was actually not planned this way, it was a NECESSITY that I had to break out the credit card and order it right around his birthday and was expensive, so I said this IS your present boy! It's an ALUMINUM cage.

Griffin now has a bad habit of biting on the bars of his (cheapy) powder coated cage. His body might be small, but this guy has 'jaws of steel' as Stephen (Anansi) put it lol! He has chipped off the powder coating (paint) in such a large area in a short time frame that I was amazed. The primer contains zinc, nice huh?! My vet says that Africans (not sure if only Poicephalus) are highly resistant (as compared to other parrot species) to heavy metal poisoning, and may only exhibit subtle clues that something is wrong (rather than sudden death). Still... I'd like to err on the side of caution since he has really gone to town on this cage like a little beaver :52:.

I am not crazy about the color, and will be a real eye sore to look at as compared to the "matching set" with Raven's black cage right now. I will have to remind myself WHY I cannot have the matching set anymore... It didn't come in all silver, and stainless is out of the question right now.
