Went to see a possible rehome

I want a B&G. I saw an ad for one yesterday. Today I went to see him. He is beautiful. I am very scared though. Owner just had a major operation and has been very ill. Wife is very afraid of it. The cage was nasty but you could tell before all the issues the B&G was taken care of... Here is why I am scared 1. The bird was bonded to only the male in the house 2. (No laughing) they have only spoken Spanish to the bird and I don't know Spanish 3. I took treats with me and the B&G ate a couple out of my hand but would not let me touch or hold. I would feel more comfortable going over there so he gets use to me but if I want it they want me to take it.
Any thoughts?

It's funny that you think we'd laugh at the bird speaking Spanish. I took in a Sun Conure that only knew Spanish. I do not, and taught that sweet, smart guy English. Food is a good bridge to start with. They don't care what you call it, food is food. Be patient, and the bird will eventually understand that you are calling something by a different name, but, it is still what he wants.

I don't think Spanish will matter to much, they can write down a couple key words he knows (treat, cage, good bird, and so on).

Best advice I can give is only take this bird on if you think you can handle it, if you think this bird will be able to dominate you and control you(maybe even terrify you) with it's large beak you may want to pass this one up and wait for a more well socialized macaw.

Lol! My GCC's former "owners" were Russian, so she speaks some Russian words and phrases. But she doesn't know Russian, and that bird doesn't know Spanish, they know how to imitate sounds. (Except for Mishka, of course) so it won't be a problem. The good thing is that they're talkers, and will learn more. Mine is picking up new things every time I turn around.

Birds can be sexest so be sure you understand that part before taking on the task! My U2 Java is that way and same with Keiko, the reason why I have such a hard time with Java and the reason why Keiko's previous momma Heather was having a hard time with her. Java like females and Keiko likes males. Not saying you can't work with a sexest bird, but it's not easy. You sure can bring him into your home and work with him over time. IF you can't get him to step up, use a perch! And use a second perch cross wise on the side where your hand is so he won't try to come to attack your hand instead cause they will do that. Work with him alone! They do better when your working with them alone cause all the commotion will irritate them where they're more likely to bite. The language part don't matter, they're smart enough to learn!

Maybe this will change some minds about this dreaded gender preference stereotypes.

As for the Spanish we had a blue and gold come in similar to bills sun conure and he changed right over to English very quickly they are smart, this bird is not bilingual.

P.s. not trying to attack anyone with the gender preference stuff but I just can't agree with this bird likes females or males as I have found it wrong and sorry proved it wrong(not trying to be cocky).

When I say sexest is they prefer male or female. Its absolutely true you can't judge sex of a bird by that. But from the ones I raised as babies I have to disagree with that link some what. As I didn't mistreat the babies but certain ones prefer females. Willie was raised by a couple as the lady handfed him and he loved her but he prefers me over a female or anyone else for that matter.

Birds don't just mimic, their brains allow them to continue to learn. Thwy CAN speak spanish and english or Russian. Not just mimic. They understand.

I've known some very sexist birds. My first Umbrella was a one person bird. He would tolerate my mom and sister and " HATED" all men (although he was never around gay men or trannys, so it may have been different if he has met them). Anyone who didn't talk or speak like a woman he instantly disliked them.

I am going to go see them today. I know they want to rehome the bird but at the cost of $800. I really want to see the bird a couple of times to see its reaction to me. I feel so bad for him. The owner is so sick and the wife is terrified of him. I will let you guys know how it goes. If he shows more interest in me with me bringing treats over I think I might go ahead.

That is we're the article describes it all and mikey as for you, you know very well parrots choose who they like, and I know you would have never done anything wrong to your babies. And it has been proven time and time it doesn't matter if you get a baby it could grow up and not like you as much as you'd think, I'm sure you've read stories of this happening.

Oh I do agree with what your saying!!!! I know very well after raising babies for 16 years. But as many birds as I've been through, some are choosy between sexes.
