Welcome 'Butternut Peanut'!

My family and I are adopting a baby cinnamon green cheek conure soon!
S/he is not sexed and our eldest daughter (4 years old) decided to name her/him 'Butternut Peanut'. We will be welcoming her/him home in a week or two!

How do you refer to your bird when s/he is not sexed? Do you just pick a gender and use it, even if it isn't correct? When I was younger I had a cockatiel named Joey... we always referred to him as a boy but he ended up being a she. We still said "he" when talking about him. Lol!

I really don't think your GCC will care very much. Butternut Peanut is cute for a boy or a girl. Gender confusion is not that uncommon with parrots.

The only valid reason I can see to know the gender is for medical issues that may arise. If the bird is female it's good to know, if she lays eggs you'll know how to care for her. You can get a DNA test by sending in feathers or a blood sample, several labs will perform the test for a relatively small fee. It's really up to you, some parronts never know the gender.

Hi welcome!! I love gcc!! Mine is a yellow sided. That is a very cute name that's been picked out for him or her as well. Being a gender neutral name will help. I chose the name Pumpkin for multiple reasons but neutrality was a consideration. If you do decide you are curious about the real gender of you bird, as I was, it cost $23 from a website called avian biotech. If it doesn't matter to you then just pick based on looks or personality. Enjoy your new friend they are a lot of fun! In the mean time read up on them in the conure section or we have forums on diet and cages and training... I had a lot of fun reading all the different forums while I waited to bring my baby home.

Thanks guys! We are so excited! Before we had kids we fostered a green cheek for about a month and absolutely fell in love with her little personality. My husband asks me every single day if the bird is ready yet. Every. Single. Day. I find myself already calling her a girl but I have been thinking about getting her sexed. I guess we'll see how we feel once she's here.
