My lovebird has been acting weird lately. He's been shredding the newspaper on the top of the cage, and sitting in it, like it's a nest. He's never done that before, and we're not sure what's going on. Has anyone else seen this?

Is your Lovebird a female??? It sounds like a nesting behavior.....I mainly see the females tuck the shredded paper into their tail and drag them back into their nest boxes but others have said males do it too which I've never seen after raising them for several years.

like Mikey said that is nesting behaviour.
females tend to chew paper in 1/4" strips about 2" in length.
males chew paper as well, just not a proficient as females do ;)

When we got him, we were told he was a boy, and that was two years ago. He's 13 now. Could he actually be a girl?

sounds like a girl but males will do it as well sometimes at 13 though im surprised she/he is nesting for the first time! but yes it definitely sounds like nesting behavior

females tend to do that in 'nesting behavior' buy stripping paper or any thin shreddable material they can find, and building a nest for themselves. males can also do this nesting behavior but honestly you never really know. the only way to trust the person that said he was a male is to make sure they had him/her DNA sexed:)
