Watery poop

Hi,

So another question. My B&G Macaw seems to be having frequent watery poops. I have been working to introduce more fresh vegetables to his diet and he also has recently had some rice and whole wheat pasta.

He seems happy enough, and is currently tucking into a dish of pellets.

I have an appointment to see the vet on Tuesday (avian vet). I know his last weight but haven't yet been able to get him on the scale (too nervous).

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions. I am new to all of this but would be devastated if I have given him anything that may have caused this.

Do you give him much fruit as this can contribute to watery poop? Great you have that AV appointment and presuming nothing else is amiss dont worry. Keep trying with the weighings, encourage and treats as this is a really great tool to keep an eye on your bird. Rice should be rinsed, cooked, I rinse again and then consumed, there are risks cooking and keeping it.

I've seen watery poops in an otherwise healthy bird after consuming fruits and veggies with high water content.

Can you pinpoint the frequency to the aftereffects of specific foods?

The vet can take samples to determine the presence of parasites and other unwanted organisms. Hopefully this is simply food related.

How are the poops themselves? Is it just excess urine, or have the droppings themselves actually changed?


Excess urine could be due to stress, a diet change, a diet high in water content, diabetes, etc. A vet check up is a fantastic idea!

Parrots cycle food pretty quickly, at most 2 hours,, so if he's had veggies or more importantly fruit, his poops will have more water component then if he's had pellets only for his last meal. Its the aggregate look of the poops you need to consider. Saltys are all over, as his first meal is pellets, his second is fruits, and the last is chop, all veggies and a bit of avicake. So the morning poops are solid, the afternoon ones are more watery, and his last ones of the day are more like the 'classic' parrot poops.

Gilbert seems to be ok. I have reduced the fruit and veg over the past couple of days and let him eat lots of pellets (Harrison’s), which he seems to really enjoy.

The solids in the poops seem normal but he continues to have lots of clear fluid, maybe not quite as much as before. I notice the fluid has a mucousy quality to it? Is this normal?

He really is otherwise Happy. Enjoying his treats, talking and dancing, preening.
