Parrots
Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
For about a month, Salty and I have spent a part of our evening time watching parrot videos on Youtube. It's the craziest thing, he has picked up words, and even phrases from doing that. We just watched some, and this is what ensued:
Salty: what cha doing?
Me: we are watching videos Salty
Salty: Is it a bird?
Me: Yes, a bird
Salty: Pretty bird, Hello
Me: Yes that is a pretty bird, but not as pretty as Salty
Salty: Hysterical laugh; and then: Salty !

He sometimes talks to the parrots on screen too.

Salty is a darling!
So tuned in and vigilant and responsive.
That's a conversation if I ever heard one.
The Rb only yells "NO!", or more likely just yells, when watching bird vids. No more interest than in his own reflection. It's J-Lo (or similar) around here or nuthin'.

Awwww! That's adorable!

My birds object, sometimes loudly, to me watching parrot videos.

I started watching a movie today, noting about birds.
I swear right after the lion roared Bella imitated the lion roar.
Bella was frozen when I was watching a video of wild African grey's

Bingo like to watch all kinds of animal documentaries but he has a short attention span.

I watch vidoes with Perjo regularly. I'm still trying to gauge how engaged she is or how aware she is off what we are actually watching.

We've watched a few videos with CAGs and I think Perjo knows she's looking at another bird and one that is similar to her but it's difficult to tell where her real focus is b/c A) she's a CAG and might be focusing on something totally different than what it appears and B) b/c she's usually on my shoulder and the laptop is on the dining room table two feet in front of her.

I play the Google animal sounds for her a lot and she has picked many of them up, she's even tried to mimic the sound of a Lambo v10.

Cookie.. my BFA loves them as well... He gets rather excited watching birds on TV or youtube. When on my laptop he will jump on my shoulder and bang the side of my head with his beak to show him the vids... saying "what is it?" "its a bird!!" He also likes to talk to my wife on the phone (speakerphone of course).. Hes a hoot... a very smart hoot at that.

That's awesome!

I show bird videos for Nacho sometimes too. He usually shows no interest but sometimes will try to whistle a bit with the video birdy. Most notably when we saw a Rickeybird vid a while back. Turns out Nacho is an Rbird fan =)

Oh, geeeez, Nacho has questionable taste! Then again, the Rbird is kinda like a train wreck. Ya just can't look away.

Thanks, Nacho!

Just for you...

I'll try in the next day or two. Tonight, no videos, I am on calls with Hong Kong all night until 4:30 AM, and the 'net is tied up doing that. It will be interesting to try and catch him - like a lot of parrots, somehow he knows when he is being filmed.

Oops - gotta get ready for the next one

My jaw just hit the floor.

I sat down at the laptop with Perjo on my shoulder and put on some videos. We found the Andy Griffith Show Theme, the version in which he sings all the lyrics, and has very little whistling in it. The song wasn't 1/3 of the way through and Perjo started whistling the theme that we learned weeks ago.

She whistles this tune everyday to some degree, bits and pieces here and there, the whole thing, but there was no obvious whistle prompting in this song and yet she just started filling in with the whistle as if she knew it was the fitting rhythm in the background.

I showed Gus a video last night of wild macaws in the top of a palm. He looked, bent over and looked harder, then sidled down J's arm to get a better look. Eyes pinned, head popping up and down. They made the same kind of grunty sounds he makes. After the video ended I tried other ones, then back to the first, but now he only gave it a passing glance. It's as if the first reminded him of something deep in his little macaw DNA, and then he decided it was just more TV. Oh well, will try again later.
