Cairo the Ekkie!
Cairo was practicing some flying with my partner when I came home today, and I noticed his feet (because he was perching on my arm) were significantly warmer than usual. Is this normal? He's an avid flyer, but I think this is the most he's flown in the past three weeks. The main reason I'm worried is because he's taking itraconazole for a yeast problem in his digestion. It's his third full day (going on fourth) of taking meds. His feet does cool down after resting, but I'm almost wondering if while on these meds and still sick if I should encourage him to rest more - he just loves practicing flying.

It's quite late at night, so if I wake up tomorrow morning to you guys saying, "ALERT!!!" I'll rush him to the vet first thing. But I just wanted to make sure this isn't just my newbie ignorance.

I personally would assume that the warmth is just blood flowing. I know I can get so hot at times that even in snow I need to take my top off because I get so darn hot

If his feet feel warm ,hot, at other times it is a good indication of fever, so Pat attention at other times. BTW my green cheek conures feet do not get hot after flying...but she has been flying for six years.

Parrots feet also grow hot when they are about to poop.
(always helps in keeping your clothing clean)

So it might have been the excercise, or just something else.

If you are worried, just check again after 15 minutes or so: if he was feeling warm because of all the exercise or needing to poop -> probably a lot less, if he is running a fever it will still be there...

and if your bird wants to fly ... just let him,
(as if you would: ) just do not "help" by throwing him into the air (or anything else some people come up with).

Since I run cold, Ember's feet always seem warm on me. I do notice a difference when he's been running around or playing, he can't fly that well since he's clipped but he still tries. So it sounds normal to me.

Mine often has warm feet when resting. Her temperature fluctuates a lot...sometimes in the morning when she first gets up she is cool, but when hanging out on a t-perch in the afternoon, she often feels warm (feet and beak).
Just did blood-work and gram stain for other reasons, and as far as the vet can tell, she is normal lol.

A bird's body temperature averages around 105F. During rest, that's ~1.88 × yours; when moving or exercising it can climb as high as ~2.45 × yours. Generally, warmer feet mean cooler body; cooler feet, warmer body. This is due to an attempt to regulate body temperature through blood flow.
