Hello I'm new to this forum. In july or august I plan on getting a green cheek conure and I want to build a cage out of pvc and stainless steel mesh plus a few other things.
here is a link to the plans I want to use: Just For Fuzzies- How to Build a PVC Cage

The cage is meant for sugar gliders but I'm going to modify the plans some.

Is this a good cage for a conure?

Does anyone have better plans for a pvc cage?

That's pretty neat! Personally though, I would go wide rather than tall, especially if you have the flexibility to make the cage yourself. Birds fly horizontally, after all!

My only concern would be how easy it would be to tip over if knocked into. I'm not positive the weight of PVC, so that's why I say that. Also, you want to consider how easy or difficult it might be to change the bottom of the cage. Based on what I see it doesn't really have a grill to prevent the birds from going to the bottom to their droppings or a tray to remove for cleaning/etc.

I'm thinking I might do something like that for a cheap alternative to an outdoor aviary! Very innovative and cool. I'm sure some more experiencing members will also pop in and discuss some pros and cons, too :)

How would a cage like this do for an african grey. That's the bird I really want to get.

Also I can modify the plans to make the cage wider.

Oh. I'm not sure how well the wire would hold against the gnawing beak of an AG. It depends on the thickness and how well it's reinforced, but take what I say with a grain of sand when it comes to those birds... hmm.

I'm currently in the process of building one.

Dimensions are 2'Lx2'w x3'H
I'll tell you how it goes when I'm done.

With the weight issue, I'm placing wooden beams, and metal 'weights' in the bottom sections of PVC, and testing it out as I go, I'm hoping to be done sometime next week and reinforcing with extra crossbeams for support.

I'm also in process of building a PVC cage! My fiance has a PGCC, and I'm looking at getting another parrot myself (I am recently birdless :'( )but I want to hand make their cage. I guess I next myself first.

I would recommend, however, using stainless steel hose ties/clips instead of zip ties. I've never had a parrot that wouldn't instantly use plastic zip ties as their newest toy. Eventually they're all broken. Also, eventually the plastic zipties become brittle and can shard off when they finally do break.

I really like the varied sizes of the doors in that plan! I know not to use hardware cloth, but is there a material I can use that would hold up to a larger beak size? If I don't get a new parrot soon, I'll just donate the cage to an aviary and I'd like it to hold up against their biggest birds.

Thank you and good luck!

Well I'm not getting an african grey. Because the breeder I spoke to only accepts money orders and my family doesn't think that's a good idea.

My brothers wife has a friend that has a young jenday conure. She's selling it and the cage, food, toys, etc for 350.

Depending on how big the cage is I may not have to build a cage.
