So my male ekkie just suddenly (about 3 hours ago) began to appear to have breathing problems. I thought it was possible that a pellet was lodged in his throat and he kept making these coughing, sneezing, and wheezing sounds. I rushed him to the nearest emergency avian vet, and he was perfectly fine while he was there... I suggested that he was only fine because birds hide their symptoms very well when they are sick. But the doctor said he looked perfectly normal, was probably coughing due to a piece of food in his throat, and sent me home with baytril just in case. Well I get home, and now he's throwing up and still appears to be in discomfort.. can anyone please tell me what they think is wrong, or if they have had similar experiences?? I've heard of ekkies becoming violently sick out of nowhere due to liver disease, but again, the avian vet examined him and said he looks fine, so whyyyy is he not acting "fine"?!?! Please send me replies and comments PLEASE!!! :(

If your bird is in any kind of distress, please take him straight back to the doctor. None of us are avian vets and can't possibly diagnose your ekki.

I see you are on the east coast, so you are in my time zone. Is your ekki usually up this late/early?

Also, bird can't cough like humans/mammals can. They lack the diaphragm and vocal cords. Is it possible he's choking on something?
Choking In Birds

They dehydrate quickly [ I had a bird die from this ]he was throwing up also. Please get it back to the vet. Insist it be seen right away . They can die quickly from this [don't wait].I think its something more than lodged food.

I wonder if the vet you went to was an avian certified vet? If not, you may want to find one and take your ekkie there. You know your bird better than anyone else. If you feel there is something wrong, (and given the vomiting, I don't doubt you're right) insist that they do more than just a hurried physical examination.

You and Bonca are in my prayers.

My heart goes out to you and Bonca, as my male ekkie is quite sick right now as well. Stay strong.

What's wrong with your ekkie Anansi? Those are pretty delicate birds aren't they? Sorry to hear that :(

Thanks Minimaker, Scott and Robin. I really appreciate that.

I don't think ekkies are particularly delicate, actually. High maintenance? I'd cosign that. But not necessarily delicate so long as their dietary needs are being met.

With Bixby, however, the current theory is that his immune system is not operating as efficiently as it should, whether due to genetics or slow development for some other yet to be determined reason. So this, combined with a particularly stubborn infection, is giving him a rough fight. The vet does feel he has a chance of beating it, though.

TeenageBirdMom, any updates? We're all hoping things worked out for you and Bonca.
