I tried to use the Search bar but my blasted phone will not allow me to use it..

What's everyone's take on vitamins and supplements for their parrots? Do you use them? Why or why not? If you use them, which brands and which supplements?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I do not offer them (vitamins) as my birds are on pellets which has vitamins in it.

I offer pellets and supplement with veggies, sprouts, seeds, nuts and other goodies, daily.

A good rule of thumb is, if the parrot is on a pellet diet, vitamin supplementation is not necessary. In fact, too much vitamin supplementation can lead to vitamin toxicosis among other things. Things like cuttlebones, mineral blocks, bee pollen are ok to provide alongside pellets I would think.

For parrots who don't eat enough pellets, and are mainly on fruit/veggie/seed/nut/animal protein diet, supplements are helpful to round out their nutritional needs. However, before resorting to manufactured vitamin supplements, it's always better to round out their diet by providing them with a wide array of natural foods. Everything in moderation of course :) Just my 2c!

Please don't give your parrot vit/supplements without consulting your Avian Vet, they could be toxic.

Thank you everyone! I'm pretty sure I had read somewhere that supplements weren't a good idea and not necessary but I wanted to confirm!

Piper was on an all seed diet when I got her (budgie diet with no sunflowers) and although she's not overweight and her feathers are beautiful I did change her to a diet with more variety and a few pellets. She seems happy with the change :)

All my birds eat Harrison's along with lots of fresh veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, ect. So I do not give any extra vitamins or supplements.
