Sun Conure- Jewel
My family decided to take a trip down to a large pet store and aviary. They had hundreds of birds at this store, only about half of them were for sale. You could definitely see that some of these birds were rescues, but all were well cared for by the owners. We absolutely loved our time there! It made me ready to bring home a parrot right then, but we knew we had to wait. :( We were able to talk to some very informed bird owners, so we got a lot of helpful information. We finally narrowed down the cage we are going to purchase because of their help. But the best part, was spending time with all the birds. They allowed their pet birds and a few of the for sale birds to hang out on their cages and interact, and they had an awesome outdoor aviary in the back of the store with some of the big macaws and cockatoo's. I had a really good time hanging out with a blue and gold macaw, he kept knocking on my arms, shoulders and head checking to see if I was a nut(My wife seems to think i am!). Here are a couple of pictures for your enjoyment. You will find that when I post stories, I think they should always come with pictures, who doesn't like looking at pictures!

Thanks for the pics, where was this store located ? Nice to hear about "good" bird stores.

Oh wow, what beautiful pictures, and thank you SO much for sharing your trip with us all. :)

I think I could easily spend an entire day there and never get bored. :D

The store is located just outside of Dayton Ohio! It was a great store, lots of products to pick from and lots of birds to interact with! We spent probably two hours looking and interacting with the birds before we even talked to an employee about our questions. We will undoubtedly be going back there again. I just wish it was closer then 2 hours away. But it was a good day trip for the family.

I'm so glad you went! The store is located in Beavercreek OH and it is called "sugarcreek bird farm" This is where I have gotten all of my pet birds. Nailztim, the blue and gold that knocked on you is named Jo Jo, he is a funny little guy! Sadie is the Hyacinth that you had in your picture. I know you were looking for a sun, did you play with the baby they had? I think it is so pretty. I actually went there yesterday hoping to meet you and your family! I asked the owners if there was someone in there looking at the sun. I had to go and pick up something I ordered from the store and thought it would be fun to meet a fellow forum member. The rb2 babies that are inside are my boys sisters. I am so glad that you liked the place, the owners are so nice and have helped me more times than I can count with different issues I have had with my birds.

Oh man, I wish I would have talked to the owner a little bit more to introduce myself! Brianlinkles, we did look at the sun conure and actually stopped it from escaping from the cage (little guy had already figured out to lift the door up, and while we were watching him, the door stuck up!) We didn't really talk to them about buying the sun because we are still 3 months away from buying one, so i figured that one would be sold long before then. Jo Jo was so much fun, my daughter kept telling him to stop hitting me! It was cute! Jo Jo was so intent on me picking him up that he would hang onto his perch with his beak and hold both feet out towards me!! It was too funny, but my wife didn't get the camera out in time to take a picture of that.

There was an african grey that started walking closer to me on top of his cage while we were in the store. So of course I had to go check him out. He raised his foot towards me like he wanted to step up. When I put my hand in front of his food, he pushed it down and lowered his head towards my hand. He wanted me to pet the top of his head, when I did you could tell he loved it! He started to fluff his feathers out and almost make a purring sound! It was great!

So nice to hear about good bird stores, the ones around here are the pits. I'll have to put them on my places to visit.

The African grey you are talking about is probably Boomer, he hangs out on top of the cages inside usually his best friend "Nigels" cage (a mealy amazon that is afraid of a lot) Boomer is great, the funniest thing happened one time, I picked him up and he bit me while saying "ouch" It was a riot, a little nip while he said the word ouch.

Henpecked, if you ever head out this way they are opened Monday, Thursday and Saturday. PM me and we can meet up! I would love to meet the guy that has helped me many times with my birds! The store is great and lots of fun to meet all of their birds!

Brianlinkles, I will be heading to the store again this saturday. We are picking up the cage we decided to purchase. Of course, we will probably still spend time playing with all the cool birds too! My hope is to get the kids ready and out the door to be there by 11 at the latest. We shall see though, kids can be grumpy if you have to wake them up!

Nailztim, I would love to meet up with you and your family! I could bring my "bird crazy" daughter Lili with me! I do however have a knitting class from 10-12 on Saturday morning. I can see if my husband can run my daughter over and meet up with you by 12:30 earliest. (I'm sure were boring everyone now on this thread, LOL) However maybe some other Ohioans can meet there as well. Let me know if this time works out for you if not then maybe when you come and get your bird. I'm thinking this may be sooner than you think!! :)

Nope....I'm not bored at all! I LOVE reading it. I think it's AWESOME how we can meet new friends like this. :D

Well, it depends on if my brother and his kids will be joining me on this trip. If they do, chances are we will be gone by 12:30. If they don't come, then we will most likely still be there, but he has some plans later in the day that we would need to head back early if he comes with us. I will know tomorrow if he is coming and how long we will be hanging out. I will post when I know more! Wendy, Come to ohio on saturday!!!! It's not that far from you!! Just a short plane ride, hehe. I actually have family in NJ, so if we ever make it out there, we will have to look you up. Have you ever heard of Sgt. Smokies BBQ? that is my cousins business.

That sounds like a wonderful bird store you don't find around here....wish I was closer to visit there....

Come on over! You aren't that far from us! It is a great place! I had some friends come in from Indy today so they could visit! My friend has been breeding birds for 40 years and he had a great time! I have great pictures of him and his friend playing with Sadie the hyacinth! I on the other hand made friends with a 36 year old grey today that really doesn't like many people, well our love affair was short lived, he nailed me in the lip! Ha, I look like I had a run in with a crazy plastic surgeon! I have to go to my husbands fundraiser tomorrow (he's running for judge) and it looks like I got punched in the mouth! LOL After he bit me, I walked into the bathroom to get cold water on my mouth so that it would stop bleeding, well I walked into the bathroom with Charlie still on my arm so as I was washing my lip up he stood there on my arm saying " the door opened, the door closed, I was on the door, then the door closed, the door opened" this went on and on! I stood there splashing water on my mouth cracking up with this ornery old guy on my arm just chatting about some door! I am officially the crazy bird lady!

Anything going pass 45min drive is far for me....lol.....IF I drive by myself, I start falling asleep after driving after 30min seriously....I don't know, I used to love driving when I first started and much younger, the older I get, the more I hate driving far....lol....And I'm not even that old yet, in my perspective anyways...lol....I'm 34 here....

34! Your a baby, not old! I hear you, I don't like to drive either but I'm always willing to take a drive to see some birds! We are going to have to work on you to get you out here one day!

Okay, my brother is not joining me on this trip, so we will be taking a less aggressive approach to getting down there. So we should definitely still be there at 12:30 and probably past 1:00. It will be fun to meet some fellow forum members.

Now, even though you think we will be getting our sun conure sooner then planned, we actually can't get it early. Our yorkie is pregnant, so we are waiting for the pups to be born and at least close to being out the door before we bring home a new sun. She is due Sept. 14th and then we will have the pups for another 8-10 weeks after that. It will be hard to wait that long, but I wouldn't want the pups to take time away from getting used to a new bird or vise versa.

I love hearing about places like that. Thanks for posting with pics.

Had a great time visiting with the sugarcreek bird farm again! Got to take the sun conure out and my daughter had a chance to pet him/her! This conure will most likely be sold before we will be able to purchase one. Also got a chance to meet brianlinkles! Its always fun to meet people from the forums. She had some pretty cute birds with her too!

We were also able to bring home a cage for our future family memeber. It didn't take long to set it up and put it in place, my wife had to re-arrange the living room (again) in order to put the cage right where we want it. But its okay, she likes to re-arrange the living room 2-3 times a year, drives me nuts!

As always, here are some pictures. First one is my daughter petting the sun. Then some pictures of the cage. We plan to put some type of play gym on top of the entertainment center, and yes, that is still an old "tube" style tv in our living room! We keep spending money on animals instead of a new TV! Hopefully some day, we will make a nice big gym with that upper shelf in the living room that simply houses some baskets right now!
