Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
I was playing with Valentino earlier this morning so Lupe took some videos of him flying. They are not very good videos but I thought I would share anyway. Wondering if it is the cameras limitations are why they are not looking better. We have a Kodak EasyShare DX6490 which we purchased in 2004. The videos are short. Sorry my voice is annoying.

I try to command Valentino to fly back to his Java tree. But he flies back to me instead

Here Valentino actually does fly to his java tree

Enjoy Valentino

Aw, you guys get so excited! He's a very good flier. Have you tried rolling your hand rather than throwing him? It doesn't force them off but gives a lot of motivation. That's what I do with Rosie, I almost have the hand movement completely phased out now.

Thanks for posting this! I loved seeing him fly and hearing his vocalization :D

Thank you so much for your kind response. I will try the arm rolling thing to get him to launch better.

I think it is funny in the second video how you can see Valentino in the decision making mode of should I fly back to her or to the tree. I love watching Valentino fly. I can't wait to get him outside.

Hey, Valentino is pretty darn good at that airborne maneuverability there :D

Thanks for sharing :)

It takes a while to get it down but once you do it's awesome :D

I wondered what he was doing XD I went back and watched it again. So cool! I made a thread of Rosie flying, and in one clip she is flying to me from a chair and thinks about landing on a deferent chair instead for a moment. It's so cool how fast birds can change direction while flying. Red fronts are deffinitly the best though.

Speaking of precision flyers, you should have seen Maynard fly before his stroke in 2011. He was so fast for a large Macaw and he had SUCH astonishing accuracy.

Sadly, Jack stopped flying when Maynard rejected him in 2005. He flew a lot more slowly (bigger bird) but he was really graceful - he'd approach the corner of a room and either hover and then turn, or pivot on a dime and fly back.

Salsa never learned to fly because he was kept clipped from his earliest days... he's trying to figure out how to manage his fully feathered wings right now in fact.

Zaf has always been an excellent flyer.

Jack and Maynard are wild caughts so they had the flight act down pat!
