Today was Vet day for all my newbies. My male Amazon " Rico" has some respiratory illness. My male Cockatiel "Clyde" also has something respiratory going on, but not as bad as Rico. Cultures were taken from the whole flock, so we will see in a few days what the problem is. Everyone except Ruby is in a quarantine room since they are rescues new to us. The female Zon sounded fine, but she was cultured also just to be safe. Poor Rico, I was told when I rescued him that he had been vetted with cultures, gram stain, etc and his wheezing was found to be fake. Well I surely got lied to by a Baptist preacher ! I am so glad I didnt take him at his word and had them vetted anyway. Please send prayers and good vibes out for Rico, as I believe he is quite sick. All I can do is keep him calm till the cultures come back, but I sure hope there is a shot for what ails him, as I believe giving him meds by mouth will be an impossible task. He and his mate haven't left their cage in years, until they came to me. I open the door and give them freedom to roam if they wish ( in bird safe room ) and they have ventured out a time or two. Their weight is low also, but they did come to me on a cat food diet, but they have taken a liking to the Roudybush pellets and apple slices. I am giving them some seed mix also just to fatten them up a bit.

Fingers crossed, hope everthing turns out okay.

Sounds like they are in good hands now! Glad to hear they are getting the help they require!

Poor things, hope they get better! It sucks people can so easily lie! Wishing them all a speedy recovery!

My son set up his Ipad to video spy on the Amazons yesterday after the vet left. It confirmed our suspicions that the female isnt allowing the male to eat. She stands guard over the food bowl and will snatch food from him if he manages to get any. Should I separate them or add an extra food bowl to another spot in the cage ? Why would she do that to him ? can she sense he is sick and weak and she can dominate him ? As far as I know they havent been separated in years. He cant get well if he isnt eating enough.

Definitely add another food bowl to the Amazons' cage. If the female starts hogging both, then I would separate them.

I also wish for a speedy and full recovery.

As for your concerns if they require oral meds. Please ask the vet for prefilled syringes filled with meds. It is SO much easier to administer them that way than via beak, especially if you have a struggling or uncooperative bird to begin with.

Administering the med via prefilled syringes is truly a breeze, and you can rest assured that the bird gets exactly what is needed. :)

Best wishes to all of you.

JerseyWendy my concern of having to give oral meds is that these two mated have been cage bound for years. I am just getting them comfortable enough to venture out of their cage when I'm out of the room. I dont anticipate giving meds by mouth is going to be easy at all. He wont even accept treats through the cage by hand, but the female will. I did add a second food dish, so I will kepp video spying to see how that works out. I may have to separate them if he has to have oral meds, so I can just spike a small amount of his food with it.
