So how long should I wait before taking Jasper to get his vet check? I've had him for about 6 weeks. Which is not very long. He seems to be settling in OK. I can take him in another room but only for a few minutes at a time before he starts to worry. If I'm at his cage he start whimpering and putting his wings down and trying to regurgitate. The only way he stops is if I walk away about 10 feet. He acts fine if I'm talking to him from afar but is a hot mess when I get close. When I get him off his cage and into the kitchen, he's fine. But again it's only for a few minutes. I've been slowly increasing the time. I really need to time it so that I actually know how much time has really passed. I offer the training stand to him but so far he says no thank you. So that tells me that he's probably not ready yet. I'd probably have to towel him to get him into a carrier to go to the vet.

My husband has been home with him but he says he doesn't come out of his cage at all. But when I get home, he comes right out to see me. The other day I walked in and he said "I love you". I almost melted. I don't want to set him back any but I'm kinda worried about his weight. His chest bone has no fat cover on it. He doesn't really let anyone else near him. But honestly, no one else has put much effort into making friends with him.

He's currently eating Fruity Pebbles but I bought him some Roudybush today and thought I'd try to switch him over. The bag says that a Grey should eat 1/2 cup daily. He's eating about 1/4 to 3/8 cup. My "scoop" is an 1/8 cup so I can monitor how much he eats. Actually, I don't even know if he eats that because some of it ends up on the cage floor. He loves fruit but the veggies and grains are hard to get him to eat. I give him nuts as treats. He used to like walnuts but once I gave him the pine nuts, he won't eat the walnuts. I've got him a treat ball that I've started to put in daily with raw veggies and a little fruit. I put in a brazil nut that I'm pretty sure he ate. The ball is empty when I check it. He's not really eating it but I'm hoping that maybe he'll eventually decided that he might like the veggies. He doesn't eat seeds. I've tried. I even put shelled sunflower seeds in his pellets, no go.

Should I just wait until I know he's ready no matter how long it takes?

Try lafabers avicakes. Our grey is a picky eater but she will eat that.
She will also eat pasta and some cheese. She loves a little meat on the bone as well. She will also eat raw cashews and almonds if the mood strikes her as well as nutriberries.

Going to the vet is a tough question. especially with a bird that is so nervous.
I guess what I would recommend is a scale to check his weight in your own home. If his weight is your biggest concern it should be easy to check without taking him anywhere.

When I bought my Grey Bella I made the vet appointment even before I picked her up. Because of the feather condition I HAD to make sure she was not going to give my other birds something nasty. I took her home in a small transportation cage and she did not have any real problem with it.
How did you pick up your grey when you got her? was a special cage used?

I wish there was something else I could say. I had a real good relationship with Bella from the first day I saw her in the pet shop. The only time she really freaked out was when I tried to take her into the shower with me. I have never repeated that mistake but I do take her into the bathroom so she knows it's not a dangerous place to be.

I don't have a grey but I have a picky eater...try Tropimix Lifetime Formula. It smells good and it's the only pellet she will eat. Mine is hooked on pine nuts too, I use them for training. She will also eat various granola bars and bread, when I eat them I give her a little taste! Good luck.
