Does anyone on here use fresh cut tree branches with the leaves on from their yards so that their bids can play/chew/destroy them?

I've read several articles that offer both Pro's and Con's to this.

I live in PA and have several "bird safe" species of trees on my property that I could potentially use.

If you do use tree clippings/branches, please let me know what type(s) of tree speices you use and what type(s) of birds you use them on.

Looking for any all opinions.

I use eucalyptus (gum), callistemon (bottle brush) and melaleuca (honey myrtle) - all Australian natives. I give these to my Galah, Lovebirds and Alexandrines. The Lovebirds don't do much with the bark and neither does the Galah, but the Alexes chomp every last particle with their big red bills until the perches are smooth and shiny.

I don't use any, because I can't tell one tree apart from another.

But some members use any eucalyptus I think, and just whack it in their cage, leaves and all. Birds enjoy stripping the leaves and the bark from trees. :)

Use the forum "search" and look bird safe plants or perches, Somewhere there's a list of native plants you can use. http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml

The forum search is on the blue tool bar near the top of the forum page.

Not much in the way of Eucalyptus here in PA. LOL. Our winters don't allow us to grow those in our yards. Often thought about an Orange or Lemon tree ...... they don't do well either though.

Thanks for contributing to the topic though.

I use them all the time! Dogwoods, Bamboo, and honeysuckle vine are the kinds I have in my yard but I also give them just flowers many kinds! I clean them with soap and water and then rinse well so all the soap is gone.

I used to, but don't anymore, since moving. Here's some old photos that I have.

I use the only bird safe tree I have. Its a sugar maple(LARGE LEAVES) not my swamp maples(little leave). The only reason the swamp maples are bad is the bark (fungus under the bark) so it would not suite what you are trying to do with the bark and leaves still intact.

I always use a lot of branches from the apple tree on my front yard, and also some birch and aspen, which there's plenty of pretty much all over Sweden!

Apple branches in my bird room:
