Cockatoo
Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

I have a 1 year and 6 months Cackatoo parrot which was super healthy and active, suddenly 4 days back he started to collapse.

4 days back, at dinner, I was having my meal and he gripped one of the fried chips and had a bite of it. Next morning I woke up and noticed that he's not making his usual noise of movement, when I looked at him he had his eyes closed so I thought he's still sleepy.

I left for work and by afternoon I received a call from hy family that he's closing his eyes, non-active, doesn't eat or respond. By evening I took him to the VET telling them the full story and they gave him 3 injections (antibiotic, another injection for the diarrhea and one more for the intestinal upset) asking me to come for 2 more days for the same injections.

When I asked what's the cause the response was it's either a bacteria or a virus but it's common symptoms caused by the weather change no need to worry.

The 2nd day I noticed that the parrot is vomiting so I informed them and they gave him an extra injection for the vomiting and the vomit reflex and the same was there for the 3rd day.

Yesterday was the 3rd and final day of the injections which I was under the Impression that my parrot will be well by then. As of today morning I woke up and the parrot was vomiting and I notoced that the poop started to get pinkish so I called the VET center again and they asked to come to give him the same injection to complete 5 days if 3 wasn't enough stating that it could be a virus which we cannot treat but this is the best what can be done.

The parrot was a bit active today not as of yesterday and the day before and I noticed he started moving in the cage and trying to eat but he either vomiting what he eats or he just break the seeds and throws whatever inside it.

As the parrot di not eat for the past 3 days and nothing is helping, I took him for another VET center sharing the full story with them, they check his temperature and it was low as 36c I believe.

What doctor said was this poop is most likely blood, he's in danger and his temperature is low so they cannot give him antibiotic, they gave him another 3 injections (to raise the temperature, stop the vomiting reflex and one more) along with that I asked them to forcefully feed him Cerelac (the baby bird food) and the doctor mixed it with some powder which she said will help him get well.

When I put him back to the cage while driving he was unbelievably of no power to the state he wasn't able to stand on his legs, honestly I thought he's dying, I tried taking him he was not able to open his fingers as his leg is not part of him he couldn't move it.

So I got him back him and I'm powering on the small heater which I have keeping it in front of him but he's pooing more and more pinkish colored poop than it was before and he's like a statue even when giving him water he's hardly stretching his neck to drink.

Note: both VETs took no tests than seeing pictures and videos, is there any tests which can be done? Another VET told that they can refer me to another VET for scope.

Anyone knows what should air be doing? How bad is it? Am I losing my parrot?

Hi there, and welcome. I’m very sorry to hear about your parrot. Hopefully he starts to feel better. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to provide him with help. If he isn’t getting better I would contact the vet again, or maybe get a second opinion. We aren’t vets on here. Most of us are parrot owners & advocates.

Yes. where are you? act fast.
good luck.

Thanks q million for your response.

I just wish that someone can guide me if there's anything which can be done.

I want to check with you one more thing, I'm using the electrical heater for the parrot which cast an orange light and it's pointed to the parrot the whole day and night, is this healthy or should I turn it off night so he can get some sleep? The weather is cold for him but with this light pointed to his face he can't sleep to recover or should I keep it to raise his temperature? Which is more priority here?

Are the vets you're seeing avian specialists? I know they can be hard to find sometimes, even here in Australia my most trusted and excellent avian vet has recently retired. But perhaps the list below may help you locate one in your vicinity...

I wish you the very best of luck!!

Right - you want a Certified Avian Vet, NOT a dog and cat vet that sees "exotics" like parrots. Thats critical in a case like this. Dont point the heater directly at the bird! Easily over heat him.

Thanks for this information, I didn't know that there's a specialized Vets for avian. I'll be heading tomorrow morning to avain vet.

Thanks for your response, I didn't know that.

I'll be heading first thing morning to avian vet I hope it's not a life threatening situation.

I'm keeping a distance just to keep the parrot warm as much as I can, do you think I should keep it without heater until I visit the avian vet?

You're most welcome, I hope they can help you! Meanwhile it's probably best to keep your cockatoo a little warmer, parrots average body temperature is a little higher than humans, and sick birds spend a lot of energy fighting off illness.

I'll do, thanks a lot

PLease keep us posted on your 'toos condition! Good luck!

Okay so I took him to a specialist and he said his condition is critical. They admitted him for 3 days with 4 times force feeding a day and ordered muktiple test.

The doctor is suspecting it to be either a slamonella bacterial infection or av borna virus which is deadly (no cure or medication which can reduce the symptoms).

I'll keep this updated for future reference.

Oh I'm so sorry the news wasn't better, @xA907x. My most heartfelt prayers are with you and your baby 🙏🙏🙏

An update:

The blood results are out and he is severely anaemic, has liver and muscle values that are so high and high kidney values indicating a kidney damage.

Based on the blood results and the x-rays they started the heavy metal toxicity therapy with fluid administration to support the kidneys, antibiotic and GI injections.

Still he doesn't eat or drink and he's hesitant/confused to move, expecting it be caused by some sort of pain so a pain killer will be added to the medication to observe the behavior afterwards.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, there's really nothing more stressful and worrying than when our babies are ill. I guess he's still in the clinic, is he? Oh and please do tell us his name 💝
