Parrots
Green Cheek Conure
African Grey
Hi all,

My green cheek conure was badly bitten by my jack russell earlier and is in a very bad shape.
He is not able to stand, barely keeping his eyes open, not drinking water, not eating food.
Every now and then he will flap his wings violently then will calm down again.
He has two wounds on the head, which are not bleeding.
A Bruise and a swell on the neck area.

I cannot find any avian vets anywhere near me.
PLEASE let me know of any avian vet in my vicinity.
I am in West London (Feltham, TW13 7BL).

Kind Regards,
Martin

Welcome to the forums, I'm very sorry for the circumstances however!!

The following resource has a list of vets in the UK, I hope it will help you...

I wish you and your poor baby all the very best of luck!

Hoping for the very best outcome, please see LaManuka's reference above! If you absolutely cannot find an avian vet, an "exotic" practice is better than none. Passive assistance such as pain relievers, possibly anti-infammatories, and wound care may be therapeutic. Please keep us updated as able.

My vet friend offered this
Looks like most are closed right now. Vet24 is open and might do birds can't quite tell. Great Western Exotic Vets works with us and they seem good. They are in Swindon, UK, but unsure how close to London and they are
Closed until Sat morning

Laura, thank you and your friend for that tip, I'm going to add them to the database now! :)

as for care
Keep warm and quiet. Don't worry about food and water right now.
You might want to get baby bird formula to offer when alert and conscious. Or offer soft warm food by hand like cooked mashed sweet potato, applesauce ...
I'm so sorry honey

Thank you all so much for the quick replies!!!

I have found a vet which is quite close to me, but closed until tomorrow morning. (CJ Hall Vets) I’m a little worried that their website says they only work with referrals, but it also says to phone them directly for any urgent enquiries. I will try them tomorrow.

As for the 24/7 vets, I am on the fence about trying them as I am not confident in their competency with birds. I am sure they won't turn me away if I phone, but I also don’t want to let someone without bird expertise look at my bud.
I am creating these scenarios in my head where I imagine that these clinics will not have their bird experts in, in the off hours.
Then I also don’t want to be sorry waking up tomorrow(doubting any sleep will happen) and the worst has happened.

I am scared, lost, panicking and just don’t know what to do.

I also found a few other vets from the list an hour drive away from me, which is no problem, in case CJ Hall turns me away.

We double posted so want to make sure saw this

Have you tried calling the avian vet even though they are closed? My local (non-avian) vet lists 24 hr emergency numbers on their voicemail - there's kind of an informal "on call" mobile phone network - maybe worth a try?

Just got off the phone to all the 24/7 clinics in and around London and the one in Swindon (Great West Exotics).
The ones in/around London don’t have any exotic animals specialist and they suggest me take him to a normal vet.

The one in Swindon does have a specialist on call, who turned me away, saying the trip (1hr 30m) is too much for him in his condition, and I’m better off going to a local ‘standard’ vet now to take a look.
At least he was willing to be phoned and asked questions by any vet I went to.

I am going to pray through the night and if my buddy makes it, I’ll be at my local avian vet’s door, tomorrow 8am sharp.

Thank you very very much to everyone that replied. I appreciate your instant mobilisation and your care and support. Means a lot.

Best wishes
Martin

I'm very sorry that you were unable to get in to Swindon, but it sounds like at least they were being honest about the travel time and the extra stress that it may cause. I am praying that your buddy makes it too 🙏

that's good advice. Decade or more ago my bird flew into a window and was knocked out shallow breathing. I called my avian vet, they too said would not survive the hour trip . To instead keep him warm and calm. He did survive, was given something for brain swelling the next day.
Edit: except encounter with animals, especially cats. You urgently want them seen and started on antibiotics , preferably within first hour. But ASAP

We are all wishing we could help. I'm hoping he recover and makes it to receive care...

Koki is still alive. Flapping his wings a lot more often. Looks a lot more energetic. Still not drinking or feeding. Still can’t keep his head up.
I am off to the vets.

Thanks
Martin

Koki was seen by the vet today.
They hydrated him and gave him painkillers, both intravenously.
Within an hour he was better and able to keep his balance and sit upright on his feet and tail, instead of laying down.

He is still very poorly and in big shock.
Not out of the woods by any means.

They performed a ‘moving x-ray’, which is not perfect, but for a proper one they gotta sedate him and he’s currently too weak for that.
Apart from the heavy shock he is in, they suspect a broken wing.

Koki will stay with them for 3 days so they can constantly keep an eye on him, hydrate him and relieve his pain.
Once he gains more strength they will perform the sedated x-ray.

Other than that, I pray for my little fighter and hope he has the strength to comeback to normal.

Thank you all for keeping him in your minds!
I appreciate every single message.

Best wishes
Martin
