Had Willy out in the family room the other day. Bob had already eaten and as I was not real hungry decided on a bagel with peanut butter. Willy was getting really vocal so I looked over at his cage and he had attached himself to the door trying to get my attention. Seems he wanted me to share my "meal" with him. Darling bird:D was so happy that I abliged him. I know they enjoy sharing food with the flock. Felt bad cause I know what I had wasn't a good choice for him but he was happy as he got to share food with mom. Yesterday for the first time I got to witness Willy exercise his wings. He is SO beautiful when he has his wings extended and his tail feathers all fanned out. He was really enjoying himself. I believe that he truly feels like he is home now.

AWWW!!! What a heartwarming story! Hey, a beakful of peanut butter bagel isn't going to harm Willy. ;) I bet he enjoyed it thoroughly.

Aren't they gorgeous when they spread out their feathers? It's like such a wide assortment of colors that you normally don't get to see. :D

Parrots absolutely LOVE peanut butter (and it is healthy in reasonable quantities) and most like bread too. In fact, there are very few things parrots shouldn't eat (you can find lists of toxic foods online), and the more varied the diet, the better! We bring our little guy to the table to eat with us, and with few exceptions, he eats what we eat. Pair nutritious table food in reasonable quantities with his daily fresh produce, and he barely touches his seed mix. He's very healthy too. In the wild, parrots are omnivores, and will eat just about anything they can get their beaks on. In a domestic environment, this means they can (and will) eat most people food too. My parents birds actually love chicken bones, and will crack them open and eat up the marrow (many parrots will do this, if offered). They also seem to have a universal love for eggs and cheese, as well as a tiny bit of butter on a tiny piece of whole grain bread :) Our guys favorite TREAT is chips, though he doesn't get it often, and only a small sliver. He also loves colder mornings when I make oatmeal instead of eggs, and ANY kind of pasta/noodles make his day. Basically, with the exception of toxic foods (like avocado or chocolate) and junk food (which we don't eat either), we feed our bird a bit of everything we eat. A varied diet is the healthiest diet, so don't feel guilty one bit the next time your little guy wants his mommy to share :)
