Hello all!,

I am not yet a bird owner, but doing a lot of research in prep for getting my first bird. This seems like a great place with lots of great people and knowledge. I have some questions in mind but i will look to the appropriate thread to post those.

So just wanted to say hi, and i look forward to having some good conversations with the members here.

Hello and welcome! I am glad you joined us and am looking forward to seeing which bird you decide on:)

I think its safe to say we ALL love it when people join to get info BEFORE the bird, instead of after they have a problem! Welcome. I hope we can help point you towards the right bird!

Welcome to the forum. :)

Welcome! Great that you're taking the time to do your research, and looking through the best parrot forum out there for answers! :)

Any answer you don't find, or if a concern comes to mind, don't hesitate to post and ask away!

Is there a certain species you might have in mind at this point? Certain characteristics you're looking for? Can't wait to see what you finally decide is best!

Hi and Welcome! Glad you joined us while searching for your feathered family member. I know the right bird is waiting for you. :)

Hey Everyone im gettin a bird CONTEST! with prize.

Can't wait to see what you finally decide is best!

Well just thought i would update this thread for anyone interested....I think i will finally be bringing home my first bird!

It has been 6 months since i joined this forum for information on different parrots and general info about birds. I am ready to take the plunge....i am nervous!

The Bird is 14 years old, coming from a home that has had it for only the last year. They got it from a gentleman who had it 13 years before that. I am not sure the reason he had to give the bird up. This family that is rehoming, the wife got the bird, but alas the bird is really attached to men, and ended up NOT liking her. That is unfortunate, as she is the primary care taker. So that along with them having a 3rd child they decided to find another home.

I am going to pick the bird up on Sunday the 8th. Its a 3 hour drive one way to where the bird is from where i am, hoping the drive and change isn't too hard on the bird. It sounds like it transitioned really well from the first long time owner to this home, so i am hoping the same is true now.

SO...anyone care to guess what species of bird i settled on? I will make it a forum contest so to speak...I like contests :)

So rules are, closest guess wins...Minimum guess to win must be species. Guess for Species & Sex......Tie breaker will be weight. Post your guesses anytime before sunday evening when i get home. When i get back and post pictures of the bird will be the cut off time to guess :D

Also, thanks to everyone up to this point i have appreciated all the help, information, and guidance. That is why i am doing the contest. one for fun, two to maybe brighten someones day if they win.

Also even though i have prepared, i am still very nervous about it. I have owned many pets in my life and always very dedicated, but am so very nervous for some reason about a bird. Everything i read they seem so fragile i hope i can do alright by it.

Thanks for dropping by again with an update :)!
Great to hear you've done your homework and are now confident enough to bring home your new buddy! It's natural to be nervous getting a species of pet you've never had before, but we're here to help you with any questions you'll have along the way. I think you'll do just fine.

So we don't get ANY hints at all?!

Pretty please, can you at least tell us SMALL (less than Rose Breasted Cockatoo/Galah size) or LARGE (Galah size or up)? :)

If you'd like, I can change the title of this thread for you - you might get more participants if they know you're doing a little game to guess a species.

Only hint i will give is the bird is bigger then a cockatiel.

Hi Jasper, unfortunately contests with "real" prizes are against forum rules.... But, you can post a 'virtual prize' ;) I think members will still have fun.

I've changed the title for you. I put 'update' so that the thread makes sense from the beginning.

Oh ok, that is unfortunate, prizes can add a lot of fun :)

Well either way guess if you would like :)

Unfortunately 'prizes' can also lead to misfortunes as the winning member would have to disclose name and address in order to receive promised prize. ;)

Ok just a wild guess here. I am going to guess a female conure. Which conure though??? I will guess green cheek conure.

Welcome....yeah that's the hard part....picking the right bird, they all call out " pick me...pick me"...and you literally want to take them all home...least I did. Now I have 5 birds.

I thought about the prize...and what i will do, is the winner i will donate the equivalent $ value of the prize i was going to give, i will donate it to the winners choice of bird related charity/shelter/group etc!...

Is that acceptable?

Just doing this for fun, and anticipation of bringing home a new family member.
