Untamed Macaw

Nice story and well done for taking him on. Looks and sounds like he will be a nice addition to the family as he gets to know all of you! Congratulations and best of luck... more pics :p

My gosh, he's going to be beautiful! Sounds like he's responding very positively to you - what a great feeling that must be. We bought and tamed a very wild cockatiel..and I mean crazy wild...he's a wonderful boy now, just having consistency, lots of love and kindness and of course a healthy diet and he's transformed TOTALLY.

I can't wait to see pictures of your new guy in a couple months.

Congratulations and of course, keep us all posted with his progress.

Take care,

Toni

Heres some more pics of him - hes just looking so much more alive and vibrant with each passing day. I have started to open his cage up each day now,and he started with just coming out and hanging on the door. Within a few hours he was perched up top on the door, and explores farther and farther with each trip out. Hes loving bananna chips, apple slices and oranges, with Pecans being his favorite out of everything it seems. :)

thats so sweet! i love the feeling you get when you make a connection with an animal, its like they "chose you" and you feel honered. that story made my day! good luck!!! :D

If it wasn't used a breeder, then taming is definitely possible and with time and patience actually pretty easy. Problem with breeder birds is they have bonded so much with their mates they generally have no interest in bonding ever again.

Learn something new every day. I didnt know that. what happens if you take their mates away? or get a single bird from a set? do they really die? and if they dont, could you tame it?

Oh my, poor thing! You've done a wonderful thing for him though! Give him lots of love and good food and I bet next moult he will look wonderful, as well as being much happier! :D

(And look at it this way, if worse comes to worse and he doesn't tame up for some reason you could always install a nice big aviary for him so he can live happily with lots of room to fly and play, or give him to a sanctuary or zoo)
:D But from what you said about your meeting, with him taking the peanut and even letting you touch him, I think he will come around and make a great companion! Either way you've given him a much better life! It might take time, maybe a bit of blood (literally, bites HURT) sweat and tears, but I think you can do it :D

We have had budgies who had their mate die, and pass away afew weeks to months later from seemingly losing the will to live ):

Taking a bird away from its (still living) mate would be like taking away from you the person you love most in the world (maybe a partner, friend, child, etc) never to see them again ): I believe some birds would eventually form bonds again (depending on how resilient they are), but it would be a huge emotional scar for the rest of the birds life.
