Simba's foster mom told us that he made this sound "now and then", but he's been making it 4 or 5 times a day over the last 2 days. It's not like any sound I've ever heard coming from a bird. Think of the old silver whistles that police officers used to have. Now think of someone standing right next to you and blowing as hard as they can through that thing right in your ear. Now multiply by 10. She told us that she thinks he's been yelled at or hit in the past for sounding off, so I don't really want to to that (wouldn't hit him anyway). We make sure not to react to it when he does it, hoping to discourage it. Anything else we can do?

OUCH!!! I'm not sure I know what you are describing, but it sound unpleasant. Poor Simba, if he was abused. :(

Ignore the outbursts, and when he is quiet, or making pleasant sounds, aka talks, reward him with a treat. :)

No way of knowing if he will ever stop the other sounds, only time will tell.

Both my big macs go through a few screaming matches every day. I ignore them as best as I can. Just before I find I'm losing my hearing or sanity, I either go upstairs and shut myself into a room, or outside (weather permitting) until they got it all out of their system.

It sucks to say this but honestly - ignoring it is the best way to discourage it. Its really hard to ignore a sound like that but you just have to pretend you don't even notice lol

When he is quiet or acceptably loud give him attention but when it gets TO loud just walk out of the room / back to him.

Its a long and hard road, but it'll get you there.

I've only come back once with a "HEY" when he did it. That was tonight when I was changing the papers in the cage and it scared the bejeebers outta me! Otherwise we've been not responding to it. When he talks, we talk back to him. He gets treats when he's being friendly and gets attention fairly regularly. He can be a funny guy, but that scream/whistle is ear piercing and usually ticks me off. But like I said, I'll never hit him. I don't work that way.

Thank you all for the advice. Pretty much what I thought. He's only been here 4 days. Guess there's going to be an adjustment period for all of us.

Oh...scares the crap out of my 85 pound lab, too. He won't go to that part of the room for 20 minutes after a "whistle".

Finally...caught on video. He was singing, then the scream. About 6 seconds in.

That's not too awfully bad. Seriously, mine get at is much much worse.

How is it going with Simba? How often does he make that sound now?

That video doesn't do the volume justice. It's really loud. We're getting used to it. He makes the sound 3-4 times a day. This morning it was 3 times one right after another, then a few minutes later Jo caught the last one on video.

Still having trouble getting him out of the cage, but when I finally do get him out, he seems very happy. He doesn't want to come out today so far. Maybe later on he will.

There's another video that I'm going to be trimming later of him singing with the radio. He doesn't know the songs, but he sings just the same. Good stuff. Hopefully get it posted today.

NAAAWWW!!! He'll get there!!

Have a chat with Blanca, she will tell you that Savannah (her GW) didn't come around all the time either in the beginning, and she is now THE biggest snuggle bunny. :) You just saw the progress she's been making with Coqui. :)

Is there anything going on everytime same when he does the scream. The only reason I ask is that in carry on wayward son, the point where he screams the singer (can't remember the lead of Kansas!) hits a higher vocal range. Is there any chance he is actually singing along and the high pitch is him showing his own vocal range? May have just been coincidence with the song, but first thing I noticed :)

That doesn't sound abnormal to me. I think he's stimulated by the music and background noise.

No, the music isn't a trigger at all. Most days we don't have music playing. He screams like that randomly. I think it's more of an attention thing. And no, we don't respond to it.

That sounds like a child's scream to me. My Quincy can copy my kids screams very well! Kids love to scream and so do parrots.

And Wendy is right. Savannah had her days or times where she didn't want to come out of her cage in the beginning. A lot of the time, it's just too much change for them and they need to stay in their safe place for awhile to get adjusted. The more comfortable she got the less I had incidents of her not wanting to come out. Now she ALWAYS comes out. Sometimes practically jumping in my arms. LOL! Especially when Coqui arrived. Some insecurity going on there. But that is beside the point. LOL!

Anyway, my Savannah girl is a huge cuddle bug and sweetheart. Give Simba some time and be patient. It's only been 4 days after all. ;) You and him will be best buds in no time! :D

Actually, it's been 2 weeks. But he's been out on the tree 3 or 4 times, and once on top (last night), and he's starting to trust me and me him, so it's all good. :)

Oops sorry! I must have confused the time. But even 2 weeks is still a short time. I am glad that you guys are moving forward and he is beginning to trust you and you him. Great job!

is he singing?? might be, you know.
No, his singing is quite different. He sounds like a human when he sings. He's an opera star, you know. "Laaaaaaa!" and "La la la!" It's hilarious. I'm trying to get time to trim the video from his singing. Hopefully have it posted tonight.

The scream is random. Usually when he wants attention.
