Types of wood trees for parrot cage ?

What types of trees can be used for parrot cages ?
Safety, strength etc....

The artificial pet store limbs are expensive.
Do I remove the bark ?

Hi there,

I also, in an effort to save money, used clippings off the trees in our yard. My birds love em!

I've used Apple, Alder, Maple, Fir and Spruce and I did not remove the bark. I've had no issues what so ever with any of our birds. They're happy, I'm happy and it works great!

The only tree I haven't used yet is cedar, as I've heard that it can be toxic for some pets.....????? However if I find out differently, I'd be happy to clip from our cedar tree as well.

I have also used miscellaneous unique shaped driftwood pieces that I've brought home from the river behind our house for table top playstands/perches.

I usually use Mulberry for perches and things. I have used Apple, too. If the trees get sprayed though, don't use it. I like the Mulberry because it's bird safe, and they are pretty much junk trees that I let stay here for the berries and to feed wild birds. I wanted to make an actual parrot tree out of one that died, but some kind of insect attacked it. They are also easy for me to reach up and cut off the right sized branches without ladders, lol!

That's awesome. I was concerned that real trees may be a no,..no, because of sap or some other crap. lol

I have crab's, apple & two large maple trees to steal branches & trigs from. Too bad that last fall I heavyly,.....trimed the maple trees, that would have been many different sizes ! :11:

(Maybe I'll trim my neighbors trees,.... after midnight) lol

Can you guys post some pics of your cages with the branches ?

Have I told you how damn EXCITED,....I am about my first large bird. :emoticonc:1218:

I use eucalyptus (Gum tree), crape myrtle (myrtle is poisonous, crape myrtle is not), and clippings from my mom's gardenia bush that's about the 8' tall haha I JUST did some clipping this weekend! I got some nice branches too. I'm making a free standing perch out of them, I'll post pictures when I'm done

I believe we'll get a Grey, but I'm in contact with Mike at Iowa Parrot Rescue and Nebraska Rescue, as they work together. The owner of the Nebraska Rescue has a friend that's lowering the amount of birds he has. One of them is a apx. 10 year old Moluccan, that is supposed to be a great and calm bird. They take him to a college program and everybody holds him. Evidently, he does not bite, scream or has other bad habits. We plan on visiting the owner and bird this weekend.

We'll see.

I thought I read online not to use maple? Or maybe it was certain types of maple, and I was unsure exactly what type my trees are. If you google "safe trees for parrots" you will find lists of trees that are safe, and trees that aren't. What I also like about Mulberry is the little sap you get dries quickly. You can also put them into the oven at 250 to kill any potential parasites but I've not seen anything like that on the live trees. You could also wipe them with a 50 parts water to 1 part bleach solution and then let that dry.

Have you ever considered to explore those trees by yourself? Maybe you will find one that is better than the other trees. For example, that is the way I have found something similar for my pet.
I know one site, it is good for that. It has different types of trees on it, and some of them are explained better, some aren't. It is probably under construction, I don't know.
