I cut off some damaged tree limbs off my neighbors tree after a big snow storm. Is the Lilac tree safe to use ? (it's not,.... the lilac bush)

I don't see it listed here but, I want to make sure it's ok to use.

Wonderful.

I also don't see "Crab Apple", do you ?

(ornamental flowering type, not eating apples)

Great. It also has list's for plants & herbs.

What I want to accomplish is to use our tree's branch's, to use inside Shelby's cage, apposed to the very expensive Manzanita branch's grown & shipped from California. Rather than just normal perch's, I want to make it look like a tree.

Have you or anyone grown a safe plant in the cage for our birds to eat the leaves, just like in their natural habituate ?

I have never grown one in the cage, but I always put tree branches in Codies Cage with the leaves on... She spends hours pulling it apart

What type of tree do you have ?
Do you leave the bark on ?
What do you do about possible bugs, sap, chemicals etc....?

I have Hibiscus that I put in and Apple Tree.. I do them in boiling water with vinegar and scrub the branches.. I leave the bark on

If there is any possibility of chemicals, I don't use them. I don't spray my fruit trees at all so I can use the branches. I usually use Mulberry, but I have used apple and crabapple as well.

I've read many people that use the oven, I was just curious about using the bark and how you can boil the branch in water, vinegar and the leaves survive ?

I assume if you bake a limb, the bark will come off anyway ?
Even if you just leave it outside for a while (how long is that ?) it will also come off.

Do you guys know what Australian native trees are that the cockatoo's live in and eat the leaves, berries etc ?

I haven't researched this yet.

I bet Pedro knows. She lives in Australia and knows a lot about cockatoos. You could PM her.

The bark doesn't seem to come off fruit trees they way it does some other trees. It's very thin skinned compared to like maple trees.

Here I am Roxy, Thanks.

I always use natives for my parrots perches, I don't need to do anything with them except just hose them down. Reason i really do that is because my birds love playing in the wet leaves. :) I don't feel the need to disinfect them in any way. The chances of them picking up a bug is really remote.

Cockatoos feed on the seeds & nuts of Eucalyptus, Acacia, Casurina, Banksia, Hakea & Grevilla. I only have Bottlebrush in my garden so that is what my parrots usually get.

Check out this link. It's a start to your journey 427HISS.

White Toos feed on seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, flowers, leaf buds, roots & insects & their larvae. In fact they are a bit of a pest to farmers. At one of the shopping centers not far from where i live the SC2's roost in the big old paper bark gums at night.

Now the problem might be, are native Australian trees easy to get here? That you may have to research. Although my S. American birds and African bird probably wouldn't be hanging out in Mulberry and Apple trees if they were wild. But, it's what I have here. Very different climate to where they come from.

I also have S. American Parrots as well & the reason i do give my birds native branches is because i do know they are safe so i would think that the same applies around the world.

I recommend no matter where everyone is from stick with the safe plant/tree list. You can't make a mistake then.

Yes, have to agree, don't guess. And don't take anything from fruit trees if you don't know if they have been sprayed. I know I don't spray my own, so that is what I use.

These days we have a lot of wood flooring from S. America and other places, so perhaps getting the branches isn't as hard as I think it is.

We have a beautiful white weeping paper bark tree that I would love to use trimmings in her cage, and it is listed as safe. But, is that every species ?

Tree Limbs non-toxic for birds:
ACACIA
APPLE -(Pesticide residue likely reasonfor periodic issues)
AILANTHUS - Tree of Heaven
ALDER - white alder -(See Dr. Vaden's site)
Alder / Buckthorn)
ALMOND
ARALIA - Fatsia japonica
ASH - Fraxinus
ASPEN - Populus
BAMBOO
BARBERRY- Berberis
BIRCH - see paragraph
