Oliver (Sun Conure)
Hi guys,
I have my 7 week old sun conure Oliver. I have some out if town horse shows coming up in a few weeks. He is still being hand fed. I'm thinking about brining him with me. He travels really well. So far I have taken him with me to visit with my parents and he does great.

So do you guys think it would be ok to take him with me. These shows are big, we are taking 30+ horses. We go all out in barn set up, so he would be in the barn around people all day.

If I do take him I would need a good travel cage. Big enough for him to spend 2 weeks in it. I will let him out several times a day, but it still needs to be big enough for his toys and such.

Thanks for any help you can give me:)

I don't see why not. I took the cockatiels I handfed everywhere with me. They went to Hershey, the PA renaissance fair, and Tennessee for a week. Ah the joy of sneaking baby birds into hotels! Babies seem to do better than adults when it comes to travel really. My handfed tiels handle being stuffed in a carrier and put in a car very well now as adults though...

Just make sure everyone knows to not take them out and handle them unless you gave permission. Clean hands and keeping them someplace clean is important. Make sure everything is properly sanitized especially with horses around when feeding! Not sure how clean a barn will be but a show barn can be cleaner than my room if I remember correctly...

Good point about asking people not to take him out. I will have to put a sign on his cage. The lounge area is usually really clean. No horses allowed in there;) but there will be dust... We also bring a full size fridge and microwave so I can keep his food fresh.

That looks a nice little cage for him =D It might be worth getting a little padlock for his door just in case.

Now back to this horse show. You are taking 30+ horses!? Do you mean your barn or do you own them all? 30 is unheard of over here!! Our top showjumper will take 15 during a busy season and that's a huge amount for one rider!! But we dont get huge public stables here either. What kind of show is it?

It's the Scottsdale Arabian show. And no they are not mine! I think the last count was 36. It's crazy:) but it's as much fun as it is work. My barn is really awesome:) I love the horses. They are really sweet happy horses.

I will for sure:). I went to Nationals in Oct. it was soooo much fun. We only took 19 horses then. So 36 will be extra exciting;).

Darn I think the bar spacing is 1" on that travel cage:(

There is this one, but is it too small?

Have you thought about using a small rodent cage?

Maybe something like these two...

The first cage is actually what I used for the two tiels. Not sure how big the sun is yet so it might not be tall enough. My tiels tails didn't touch the bottom when I was using it back then.

Here is the bird cage I have for my little Senegal and it's the perfect size for her and maybe even a bit large for her, but she has plenty of room. It was $44.00 + free shipping from Dr. Fosters and Smith Pet Supply. bar spacing is 3/4 of and inch is what the ad says, but it looks more like 5/8 of an inch.

Travelling with bird is great:cool:. I took my Lily camping with us for 5 days. She loved it! There are only 4 of us but we got an 8-person tent. Great for her to fly around inside. We have sneaked her into our hotel room a few times in other car trips. She even got to fly with us across the country last summer. It takes a bit of planning, but we always find ways to make it work.:D

I wish I knew about collapsable cage last summer. I didn't know they such cage until I saw this thread. I bought a regular cage for use while in North Carolina for $40, used it for 2 weeks, and threw it away.:(
