So last night was Halloween. I gave the birds new toys before taking the kids trick or treating. Got home about 11:30 and put the kids to bed and covered up the cages. Everyone was fine. Got up 45 mins late this morning. Got the kids to school and when i got back home started uncovering cages. When i uncovered my U2's cage my heart dropped to my feet. She was on her perch with a rope tied around her neck. She looked at me like"hey mom i need help". I grabed my best knife put in on the couch. Then opened her door thinking this is going to hurt. She steped up and let me put my upper half of my body in her cage so i could unsnap the toy from the top. We set down on the couch and she started biteing the rope pretty hard so i just gritted my teeth and grabed the rope and cut it. She just turned around for a snuggle like nothing had happen.
I know how lucky i am that she waited instead of trying to fight it. Lets just say the toy is in the trash. She has had at least 3 of them and never done that before. I know she loves to tie her doors on her cage closed but she has never tied a rope around her neck before. So for now on all extra rope on toys will be cut off daily.

wow, that is amazingly lucky that she remained calm the way she did! I'm so glad too or this could have been a terrible story! Would you mind sharing with us what kind of toy it was?

OMG you are so fortunate.......... I had goosebumps reading your post.
Thank God your bird sat still and did not try to get the rope off. Clever bird !!!!

When I place a new toy in Mishka's cage, I sit around for a few hours watching what he does with it.

We can never be too careful.

PS... what kind of a toy was it?

I had a bad toy once, one of those hard plastic peanut shaped toy you put peanut into for them to figure out how yo get it out. It was made by Latter. My macaw's foot got caught in it, my partner was home when it happened thank goodness, I rushed home from work and use veg oil to get his foot out and I had backup pliers if needed. Then I had to run back to work...

By the way I took pics and wrote to Kaytee headquarters and made a complaint. They sent Willie a big box of new toys and treats to apologize. Willie could of chewed off his foot to free himself!!! I was panicking while driving home...I was relieved after removing the toy off his foot...

Wow I'm so glad both of you are okay!!!! I would have been in tears that's just so scary :(. It is a very good thing she didn't freak out and start thrashing around. Thanks for the toy warning! I never would have guessed that this would have been a problem toy, since it doesn't look that stringy.

I cannot even imagine the stress you felt.
I am so relieved to hear that everyone is okay.
You must have had some good karma stored up and I am sure you realize how lucky you guys are!

Your bird is so smart to have remaind still for you. I do hope you register a complaint about this toy. Thank G your bird is ok and you acted fast.

That was the scariest thing i have ever had happen to me with my birds. Looking back on it when i uncovered her she was just standing on her perch just waiting for me to help her. I was alone with no one i could call to help with my baby. I just think our bond saved me from a nasty bite. I never have good luck so this morning had to be a lot of saved up luck :D

I agree!! That's a great way to look at it - when nothing's going right, something in the future will go very right! :D I think this incident really strengthened your bond too :). I'm so glad everything turned out okay.
