TOPS pellets

I would skip the TOP pellets due to a questionable change in ownership, product name, and production. We use Harrison's and Roudybush pellets along with Goldenfeast and fresh fruits + veggies. We were using solely TOP (Totally Organic Pellets) but switched after I received some nasty emails from the company when I inquired about the product. I have read on other boards where others are now questioning those pellets as well. Can't miss with Harrison/Roudybush/Goldenfeast with some tender loving' fresh fruits and veggies.

It's hard to take advice from someone whose first post is to bash someone without even providing a reason for it or links to back up your opinions.

This is your second (AND last) bashing post on TOPS.

I smell a troll!

Questions, for a GCC, which Tops product is best? A reacouring add is Goldenfeast. Same question. Also where is the most popular place for getting these products?

Yay, ran up to Loveland, to Avalon Aviary and picked up couple bags of tops pellets for JoJo. Nice folks!

Are you in Colorado now, not Florida? Or did you catch a plane out to Loveland just to pick up some bird food? :D

Was worth the trip!
Kidding, got sent on a last minute assignment to Longmont. I enjoy the area, but in more humane weather! Flying back to Orlando today.

You're right about that! My sister lives in Broomfield and we're probably going in April. I'm hoping the weather significantly improves by then.

What is the general consensus on Roudybush pellets? I decided to try some new ones to mix in since I don't know which Sailor would respond to better. I had zupreme natural and ordered some roudybush to try. She loves the Roudybush way more than she did zupreme which got flung far and wide. I didn't even know about TOPS pellets until I read this post. Should I try to switch her to TOPS even though she loves Roudybush? Are those somehow worse? Is the only clear benefit that they are organic or do they have better ingredients too? Figuring out which is the best is difficult because there are such widely varying opinions all over the board about these brands. It's confusing. Can the Mods weigh in here, what do you feed your flock?

The first member of my current flock was a quaker, she was a serious plucker and starting to mutilate. Seeds were the only thing she recognized as food. Converting her to a better diet was a challenge for both of us. Her AvVet recommended Harrison's or a high quality pellet (colorless). Harry wouldn't touch Harrison's. Zupreem natural soaked and softened in diluted organic fruit juice, got her attention, once she would eat those, I changed to Roudybush crumbles. When I added a Too, another quaker and a tiel, I fed them the same pellets. The whole flock eats Top's or Roudybush crumbles now. I feed one for a few months, then the other.

My birds get fresh chop twice a day, cooked grains and veggies, and a variety of other foods. Pellets make up maybe 30% of their diet. That's a rough guess.

Thanks Allee, I appreciate the input. I'm trying so hard to get her to eat right. She refuses grains, oats, and beans at all. I made a huge batch according to the directions of the people here that make their own. I froze portions of it in baggies and defrost it daily. Every single day she refuses it and I throw it out. I've tried mixing everything together, the fresh cut up greens and fruits, the sprouts I just sprouted, and the beans/oats/rice mixture. If mixed she refuses to go near the dish at all. So I've take to putting the beans/rice on the bottom so maybe she'll eat some of the fresh stuff on top. She nibbles and drops the sprouts, she refuses all fruit but apples and grapes. Bananas get thrown, plums, broccoli-all that other stuff gets picked up and tossed to the floor. Just apples and grapes so far. I haven't seen her eat a sprout yet, generally she just nibbles and rips them up for her own amusement and then she drops them on the floor. She loves her goldenfeast and roudybush. She loves nuts. Birdy bread was a failure with her. This girl is really pulling all the pranks she can on me so far. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I need to make sure she at least eats good pellets so any deficiency in her diet by her refusal to eat better stuff is hopefully somewhat met. I just added Sunshine Factor to her food mix as well which she seems fine with. I give fresh food in the morning hours and leave them there until noon and then switch the bowl back to pellets/goldenfeast and she happily climbs over and eats that right away. Is that the wrong thing to do? If she doesn't want the food she refuses to eat at all and that scares me too much to wait her out. She arrived thin looking to me, I'm not comfortable taking away the only food she will eat well if you know what I mean. It's too new yet and I don't want to push her. I do walk over all evening long and hand her bits of fruit that she'll eat a little of before dropping what's left of it. I try, that's all I know how to do right now. She's got me on a short leash, little brat.

From my back stage seat, both are great! My JoJo, when I first handed him a tops pellet, said ya, right, crap! 2 min later, he said, only kidding, love it! Been digging into it with a passion all this evening.

Alright David :). I don't normally like to chime in on every pellet and diet related thread, but since you asked for mods ;)... I think that Harrison's is hands down the best pellet in terms of nutrition. The reason I say this is that I've had Robin my Red Bellied parrot for over 20 years now, and for the majority of his life he's enjoyed Harrison's. I'll even admit that for a good period of his life that was all he ate. His bloodwork was then done after years of this.... It was PERFECT. No nutritional deficiencies at all. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT condoning a 'Harrison's only' diet, but just sayin'...

I am guessing here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the other commercial brands don't quite measure up nutritionally. But probably Roudybush, Tops, are among some of the better ones too, and I've heard good things about Lafeber's and Goldenfeast. Some brands have a higher protein content, and for example, Pionus like Raven are a species who shouldn't have too much protein long term. So some pellets might be better for certain species too.

Raven and Griffin normally love a wide variety of fresh vegetables, but on certain days where they just don't feel like eating as much of it, I feel reassured knowing that at least my boys are still getting excellent nutrition with the Harrison's there (in a separate dish).

I've been lucky that all of my birds (including past birds) have taken right to Harrison's (fine sized) pellets and loved them. From what I hear here, that's not the case with all birds though.

Oh dang, fruit blend zupreem is bad? Lilo will NOT eat the plain stuff. Is the fruit blend good for her at all?

I'm sure it's better than straight seed.. Even though it's not a front runner in nutrition, it still was formulated with birds' needs in mind. You can liken it to dry dog foods I guess.. There are grocery store brands that aren't gonna kill your pet and are most likely fine, but then there are the best quality organic blends with all sorts of ingredients geared for optimal health including coat, skin, and bones. More expensive too of course. Are her poops bright colors? Lol ;)

I agree with you fully, I have heard only good about Harrison! JoJo has 3 types of pellets at the moment, the other two being Zupreem fruit blend and the natural, so the Tops is a good move up the ladder. I keep them separate and in different areas. My breakfast is a mixture of flax, chia, and hemp seed(varies- weat germ, sesame seeds, Brewers yeast, and a nasty dried veg powder at times) JoJo always shares it with me
Harrison is definitely my next addition, and am just trying to use up the Zupreem! Freezer getting full tho. JoJo is not at all picky! And this is a bird that was on a pure seed diet, Kaytee, for over 6 months! First night I brought him home, he was very happy with the pellets! Ya I know, I got real lucky!!

I thought TOPS made baseball cards. I don't think that gum they come with would be good for your birds.

I'm a helper...
