I’m looking to do a new art series of 10 drawings of the most “quintessential” parrots. Just wanted the bird communities opinions on what those birds would be. For example, budgies are a popular parrot, but what color? Or macaws, what species? What do you all think? Thanks for the help! everyone!:orange::grey::green::whiteblue::white1::blue1::rainbow1:

I would think the common green and yellow budgie (ie. the native colouration) would be the best bet. I would *hope* to see Alexandrines on your list, especially since Alexander the Great was supposed to have owned one and caused the species to be named 'Psittacula eupatria' ('Little parrot from the good land'). CAG should be there too, since it's (I think) the earliest known domesticated parrot. I think the SC2 is everyone's image of a cockatoo and the Hyacinth macaw is representative of the macaws. Beyond that... I dunno! I s'pose it depends on where you live to decide what's 'quintessential' and what's not. :)

You got to have 1 of the hot 3 amazons represented.
Blue front, yellow head/double yellow head, yellow nape.

What a neat idea! I agree - the green and yellow budgie is the best color When someone says “parrot” - the first image that pops into my head is a macaw on a pirate shoulder so a macaw should definitely be there. Lovebirds is a commonplace term used to describe cuddly behavior in people, so maybe a pair of lovebirds would be appropriate. Just random thoughts :)

Blue budgie, blue Quaker, blue fronted Amazon, blue ring neck, blue parrolet, blue and gold macaw!
Laurasea likes the blue! So I'd love to see a study in blue

The normal gray or lutino cockatiel and the blue or green budgie come to mind for me! As for macaws, I feel like the most common are blue and gold but I see a fair few green wings as well.

Thanks all. Here’s kind of what I’m thinking:

1. Budgie, yellow/green
2. Pair of lovebirds, peachface (these seem the most common)
3. Grey cockatiel
4. Green cheek conure
5. Pair macaws, blue and gold and green wing
6. Amazon, double yellow head
7. CAG
8. Pair, male and female eclectus
9. Cockatoo, surfer crested
10. Still up in the air between an IRN and an alexandrine. IRNs are more popular/well known in the US (I think blue is the most common color?) but I’m not sure if that applies worldwide where I think alexandrines are more popular.

These are going to be more “busts” of the birds. I’m doing these in my pattern art like these 2 of a shoebill stork and major Mitchell cockatoo (sorry my stupid website won’t let me link my own images so I don’t know how else to share besides linking to IG. These are MY original drawings though):

I really can't wait to see these Kiwi! Your art looks amazing already and you've drawn a few beautiful birdies already on your instagram.

Well that is a great list - a varied selection! Hope you’ll let us see the work as it’s completed :)

Thanks! I have drawn quite a few birds. They're my favorite thing to draw:)

I will! I'll probably link back to my IG since I don't want to put my art on Imgur and can't seem to link it from anywhere else

I don't know about popularity as pets, but IRNs are probably going to be the most recognisable worldwide to non-parrot owners because there are thriving feral flocks all over the place.,

Understanding that I'm not allow outside of the 'Boat' without a color choice check by Mrs. Boats first! That reality stated, it would be interesting if the nominate colors are used to better define the species. Just my two cents...

Oooh, Julio agrees with your choice(s)!!! :D

For most of my life I desperately wanted a pair of Indian Ringnecks. I thought they were the coolest, suavest, most graceful-looking birds with that exquisite green colour and the elegant black ring on the males. One day I went shopping for a Lovebird for my son. The breeder had plenty of Lovies and a few IRNs, which captivated me. I discovered you could get purple and turquoise and a lovely pearly grey colouration. As I watched, rapt, I walked to the end of the row of cages and a clear, crisp voice said to me 'Good morning!'. It was the first magnificent Alexandrine parakeet I had ever seen and I fell immediately in love with him!

He was twice as big as the IRNs and his green colour seemed to glow in comparison to the smaller birds. His bill was so much larger and that jewel-like red contrasting with his green was so striking. The shoulder patches were like epaulettes and gave him a military bearing as he sat regarding me from his perch. I was totally smitten and decided on that day my heart's desire was to share my life with a glorious creature like this.

Many years later, I found Barney and Madge living an awful life in a darkened room with blankets on the windows to stop them shrieking. The young girl who owned them had no clue about their needs and didn't really care, since their noise had put her off them. She virtually gave them to me to get rid of them! Since then, a larger (*much* larger* cage, plenty of toys and plenty of work has meant my Beakies are polite, well-behaved and (compared to their friend, Rosetta) practically silent.

I would choose the Alexandrine parakeet first in my list of quintessential parrots, if not because of their ancient heritage, then certainly because I just LOVE them. ;)

My list:
Blue and Gold Macaw
Double Yellow Head Amazon
African Grey (either one)
Green IRN
Celestial Parrotlet
Green and Yello Parakeet
Umbrella Cockatoo
Male Eclectus
Sun Conure
Hawk Head Parrot
Senegal Parrot

Oops, thats 11

And if you want to grab someone's eye then I don't think that there's anything better than a Palm Cockatoo

I do want to draw a hawk head! Black palm cockatoo too. At some point I plan to do rare parrots, which is more where those guys would fit in because they are striking and uncommon. Also want to do a St. Vincents amazon in there somewhere too and possibly even a kea and kakapo.
