Good morning All :)
I have a quick question. Are ripe to,takes with the seeds removed safe for parrots? I gave them one for the first time this morning but was then told I shouldn't have. Should I be worried. Very confused. Please help. Thank you.

I don't give them much or often. maybe a half a cherry tomato or grape tomato. It will make their poop red.

Thank you very much Antoinette :) they didn't touch the tomatoes though, they don't seem to like it.

I guess wild birds weren't given the memo. I can't grow a tomato that doesn't come with peck holes on it...

Yes they are indeed quite clever, they ve figured out how to escape from their transport vessel so now I have to secure the door with a clip to prevent they coming out when I m no tlooking as the neighbors have puppies and I don't want any accidents. I m considering adding to my family, cockatiel or lovebirds? Ideally I d like a bird that would enjoy being cuddled and sitting on my shoulder, calm temperament and doesn't mind exploring the garden,

I've been feeding tomatoes to my parrots for over 20 years and they've all done wonderfully on them (few other fruits are as nutritious or prevent cancer as well as tomatoes!). Wild quakers eat them all the time. As to their acidity, it's all due to the high vit C content (vit C protects their liver) and it's not as if it will destroy the enamel of their teeth so I don't see why people say they are not good for parrots.

I've never been able to understand why tomatoes have been suggested to be bad for birds, since chilis are recommended for eclectus, and the two plants are closely related. However, our birds simply don't like tomato overly much, but even the corella loves chili. The leaves and stems are, however, not good for birds, a not unusual situation. I lived on a remote oceanic island for some years, and struggled to grow tomatoes to maturity due to the large numbers of feral chooks (chickens).

Most of my birds eat tomatoes. They also like dried tomatoes. Dried tomatoes are much less acidic than raw. Plus, pasta with tomato sauce is a big favorite with my fids.

Thank you very much Antoinette :) they didn't touch the tomatoes though, they don't seem to like it.

I don't blame them! I can't stand fresh tomatoes! :09: I will, however, eat them any other way (dried, sauce etc) which, judging by the link Antoinette posted, seems to be the way for birds too! :D
