Toenails

Hi everyone! I've got cement perches and pumice perches on order from the USA (live in Malawi we have no access to AV and regular vets do no treat birds other than chickens) to address Nigel's toenails. In the meanwhile, I'm considering filing them a bit myself and perhaps ordering some kind of toenail trimmer. In years past, ive had access to vets and groomers to take care of my greys toenails especially (beaks never a problem). Do any of you have experience with a friendly trimmer other than a nail file? I hate clipping them. There are various kinds to choose from but wanted to hear from you all before ordering anything.

Toenail clippers for parrots are the same ones used on cats. So, its commonly an issue of fitting your hands.

If your parrot will allow you to hold him while you are filing his toenails, that's like perfection.

I use a dremel on all my birds nails, they make a small handheld, battery powered one. BUT, I used it for years doing dog's nails, so I have experience on how to do it properly. Some birds don't like the noise, but I've found I've had less problems than nail clippers, especially with my Sydney whom I've gotten used to it over the years.

You can also consider a hand file, which I've used on my smaller birds, since their nails are so small. I also find that this prevents nails "catching" on fabric.

I was never able to convince the Rickeybird that nail work of any kind was a good thing. Over the years, I've worked out the usage of cement/pumice perches (and smooth ones). I haven't had to do his nails in 15-20 years. I just change the textured ones out as they become worn. BUTTTT... I always give him a smooth one for his night-time roost, and his food and water bowl purchases. I keep an eye out for foot issues, but haven't had any. Good luck!
