So i have just got my second bird (literally hours ago) and i want to do this right!

He is just under 3month old male Eclectus and since getting him home he has had a little wander around on the ground then i put him in his cage (with the door open) to explore but he hasnt moved from where i have put him. He just seems to be sitting there watching me and honking(?) and stretching now and then. He was described by his breeder as a very cuddly bird.

I figure just leaving him to it is the best option for now and let him come out and explore in his own time but what tips and tricks have you got for me over the course of the next few days/weeks to get off on the right foot with him and keep him happy while earning his trust?

With my other boy (little barraband) i just left him to it and he was quite happy to come out and explore and take food (very food orientated).

Thanks =D

Others will speak up soon, but eccies aren't really known for being cuddly, so I wouldn't expect that from him.

You're on the right track there. You might put a hanging perch on the outside of Nelson's cage, right under the door, so he'll have a safe and comfortable place to stand when he's ready to venture out of his cage.

Something that's often suggested to help a new parrot adjust to his surroundings and new flock is to simply sit near his cage and talk softly to him (you may also read to Nelson and even sing to him if you'd like). That helps the parrot get used to you and the sound of your voice. If Nelson has a favorite treat, you might offer him some now and then too-- that's always a good way to win a parrot's heart. :)
