Shades: African Grey Congo Male, hatched June 20, 2016
Hi all! So, Shades has shown me when he wants to bathe. He started getting into his water bowl, as shown in the video (I hope the link works), so I put a large Rubbermaid bowl in his cage. It works, but he isn't able to get his back wet. I have a mister for him, but he hasn't taken to it very well. I'd like to get him a perch for the shower, but our tile isn't smooth, and I am afraid suction cups won't hold. I'd hate for him to fall as a result. Any suggestions on how I can get him to bathe in the shower where he'll have plenty of room to fully enjoy the experience?

This is my first attempt at posting a video from my YouTube channel.

Personally I dont have a shower perch and just bring Loco in with me. When Im done washing up I just go grab him quickly and make the water cooler so it wont burn him and he just stays on my hands.

Shades is still somewhat of a biter, and I need both hands to deter his biting. As clumsy as I am, we'd both be on the floor if I tried to shower with him. Lol!!!

Your video is set to private!

Ha! Thanks for letting me know. :)

I've made it public, but didn't know if the same link would work, so give this link a try.

My Amazon loves to shower with me, but before I got him I learned he was use to having the shower on and he was placed in the bottom of the tub. He bathes with pleasure, lol. He loves water, so you could see if he likes being in the tub with a light spray falls no.

Apparently after working 6 12 hour night shifts my brain is fried. I never would have thought to just put him in the bathtub and give it a go. (where is the face palm emoji?)

Thanks! :)

Ha Ha we have the same exact cage and my Timneh does the same thing. I'm not sure if the bowl I bought isn't deep enough or maybe too wide around cause it doesn't get used so far.

tried everything with Smokes..misting..shower..she'd just hunker down, draw her arms to her body, shake her head and look at me with dis gust..BUT as soon as she went back to her house she'd jump in her water bowl and make a complete mess...even a bathing bowl she wouldn't get in to..sighhh..
I take Amy into the shower with me on her perch stick and she goes to town..flapping,singing,'zon mumbles.

BB is learning...he likes the kitchen sink lol.

I've been using the dish basin with water in it on the shower floor put Gracie on the sides of. Basin and rinse her with the shower, but she keeps her feathers close and just stands there and let's the water run off no shaking or fluffing to get the water under her feathers.i'll keep trying though

If you own the home, just make a perch out of PVC pipe and epoxy the thing on to the walls. Thats what I did.

That's an idea Al..I have used those suction cup thingies, and even after cleaning the tile ( now that the bathroom was redone a few years back, I font have tile, have that "bumpy" type of...geez I cant remember the name ) the perch would unstick and poor Amy (or Smokes) would crash to the tub.

Now with a different wall texture, nothing will stick..Maybe epoxy a fixture, where I can then screw/unscrew a perch to it (so its not in MY way) plus with those regular shower perches, they aren't long enough for Amy to spread her arms out wide and get a good flapflapflap going.

I just put him in the tub with the Rubbermaid bowl I'd used previously to help with familiarity, and the mister. He just sat on the side of the bowl looking at me as if he were saying, "please pick me up. I don't like this." He never puffed up or flapped his wings. The water just ran off of him. He did let me towel him and dry him with the blow dryer without a fuss. When he preened again, his beak looked as if he'd stuck it in flour. LOL! I'll keep this up weekly, to start, then progress to more frequent baths. He didn't seem to hate it, but he didn't seem to like it either.

Hopefully, by next year, we'll be purchasing a house, and get a bigger cage. This was as small as we could go for a Grey, but as large as space permitted. I'm heavily leaning toward a stainless steel.

I put the Quaker, green cheek, and cockatiel in the tub together, and the Quaker and the green cheek love it, they try to bath in their water every day anyway...the cockatiel not so much (of course, the dusty bird hates water). It's hilarious, as soon as I put all 3 in the tub, the cockatiel immediately climbs onto the Quaker's back in an effort to escape the impending doom...

My new baby Senegal I haven't tried to bath yet, he hasn't gotten in his water dish yet, so I might try the shower and see what he thinks. Either it will go well, or I'll be in the ER. We'll see.

Just be careful with the blow dryer - the heat from the element can warm up the plastic and other internals, which can emit fumes that are poisonous for birds.

Thanks! That's good to know. I use the cool setting so it doesn't get too hot, but I'll keep that in mind.

The second bath went well. He's still dusty, so I'm going to keep it up for once a week, and work up to a few times per week. He only screeched when I put a few drop onto him to let him know there was water in his "bath bowl." He seemed to prefer the mister, but he still didn't loosen his feathers much. As a result, I had to help get the water to penetrate through to his skin. I could tell he was not enjoying it, but not hating it either. Hopefully, things will get more relaxed as the weeks go by.
