Parrots
Eclectus - Shadow /
Sulfur Crested - Chicka
I recently started taking Shadow out and about with me where ever possible. As you can imagine she gets lots of attention from people in the streets. On the weekend a woman who was fussing over her commented how lovely Parrots are and how easy they are to care for. I replied that I think they are like having another child and I spend so much time preping food, cleaning, bathing, training etc. I also told her I love every minute and the rewards are worth it.

I then started wondering if you all felt the same way or am I too obsessive .

Nope, I treat my birds like they're kids. I call them my 'babies' or my 'kids', and I will actually feel like a bad 'mother' if I don't provide my kids with their daily fruits and veggies. You're not alone... :D

I definitely think of Dusty as my baby. In fact my mom often jokes saying that I seem to love Dusty more than my human family =P

When the weather is nice i like to take Dusty out on walks with me. Gotta wait a while longer for him to come out though. Its still rather cold her in New York...and Rainy...April showers bring May flowers I guess :)

If you were to ask my cat Christine if I spend too much time with my bird Rosie and she would say "Meow yes, yes". The more time with your bird the happier you bird. That is what I think anyway. If they want to alone for a while the birds will let you know.

Our birds are definitely like children...it's like having an inquisitive 2 year old who can fly. They seem to need more interaction that our dogs; the dogs are at the place that after feeding time and a bit of running about in the back yard, they're asleep on the floor for 3 hrs.

Now, Max and Jade crave interaction with us. Jade can fly to us and demand it, Max lets us know vocally when he feels that he's being ignored.

And I miss them when I go to work.

You are not obsessive at all, that why they call us the crazy bird people.
Mishka, my AG, is treated like a human, and will always be.
Must admit thought, at times she comes before the human family. They can fend for themselves, cook meals etc.
As parents should spend quality time with their children, teaching them, loving and caring for them, Mishka gets good quality time each and every day, with an hour's training at night.
When visiting friends and customers, they always ask after Mishka, as if she was part of the family.
A bird ask for so little, food, water, treats, love and attention.
Yet they give back so much more.

I only have 1 and he takes a chunk of time. Between feeding, playing and cleaning he does need time. People seem to think that since birds live in cages they are easy. I think caged animals may be the most neglected type of pet.

I agree. Max & Jade are only in their cages to sleep or if, in Max's case, pouting and refusing to come out...however, we leave the door open in case he changes his mind.

I agree too, for the woman to make a comment like she did I would imagine has never owned a parrot or if she did it's a neglected-caged bird:mad:

No, not obsessive-- just a normal parront! Caring for a parrot is a lot like caring for a toddler, and they deserve all the time and attention we can give them.
