We're in the same boat erik7181. I've had a U2 for almost four years and am adopting a B&G macaw in about a week. I've never been around them but looking forward to the experience. Let's hope you get positive feedback!
I say go for it! We're getting a B&G and a Harlequin and are almost as excited as when we put together our son's nursery over 15 years ago. We're approaching like having 2 more kids. I guess you should just be ready to have your life change for the "funner" and enjoy the ride.
1 nanday conure Black Jack, 1 Brotogeris parakeet Whiff, 1 ring neck dove Eliza, and 6 society finches (3 are tame). RIP my parent pairs of societies and my little gouldian finches
May I suggest a harlequin macaw, it's a blue and gold green winged hybrid, you get the best of both . Which ever you choose, your pretty much buying a child with a can opener on it's mouth that never grows up. But you also get the smartest funniest most lovable best friend you will ever have
Before I would advise you on any Macaw or Large Parrots, You really need to do your homework and know what your getting yourself into.
Out of all the Macaws, the Hy and Green Wing are the best choice of the Macaws by far. They're known as the gentle giants of the Macaw world. They can be expensive. They demand your attn. they require lots of space and the biggest cage your can find and afford. They can be pretty dangerous if not handled correctly. Their bite is very powerful and should not be around small children.
I would advise you to search a local brid club in your area and go to one of their meetings, most club members bring their birds to the meetings so you can interact with them and know first hand what your getting yourself into.
B&G can make wonderful pets as well but are known to be nippy and as they mature, they go through ups and downs on mood swings.
If it's the color that made your change your mind from the GW to B&G. I would advise you to look into the Blue Throat Macaw first. They are much easier to handle and smaller then the B&G. Best of luck and please do not rush into purchasing a Macaw just because you want one. Thanks Joe
I will just say I have to agree that macaws can be a challenge and need alot of attention and require lots of studying before purchase.. And I would say the greenwings are more challenging then the blue and golds on top of have ALOT more force behind their bite... Please keep in mind these are a lifelong pet as they will more than likely outlive us...
