The Reason I’ve been Absent

I got to meet a beautiful male Ekkie at the shelter. I wanted him. He unfortunately isn’t up for adoption. The Ekkie that is available for adoption only likes men. I took photos of the beak & nails so I know when Nico is getting over grown. This is a red sided Ekkie. Nico is a Solomon. Now that I’ve been around the different types of Ekkie’s you really can see the difference in size & coloration.
They are so beautiful 😍

I have been wondering if Pickle may be a red sided instead of Solomon Island. The yellow band on his tail is wider, etc. What other things did you notice between the two?

Nico is like a pine tree in coloration. He’s a darker green. The other sub species seem to be a brighter green. Nico is about 350 grams.. both the Ekkie’s at the shelter are 400+ grams. Nico is tiny. Nico has a pale yellow beak. The others are more candy corn colored with the brighter orange colors especially towards the top of the beaks. Nico’s tail is shorter.

There are actual huge differences if you see different Ekkie’s in person. I was rather amused.

This is the other male Ekkie at the shelter that is available. He’s got quite a bit of size on Nico. His beak is much brighter, same with his coloration. I don’t know how else to describe it.

I'd been wondering how Nico would react to his new flock mate, I'm so glad to know he's handling it well! 💝

I'm happy to hear Nico and Blue are doing well and it's not causing any stress for Nico. That's awesome!

Funny, I had it in my mind that Nico was bigger. I guess I didn't catch that he's a SI. My Tucker is a red sided and is between 420 and 450g. At 450 he's chunky, so we work him back. Probably not the best, and his vet isn't thrilled, but I don't mind a few extra grams on him over the winter when the house is cooler. Insulation, you know 🙄 He was 435 last week, so I'm happy with that.

My first ekkie Patches was a Grand, and right at 400 all the time.

I didn’t know Nico was a Solomon either. His vet, a zoologist, and then the lady who helped me with Blue who went to school for zoology told me he was. They immediately caught it, and knew. I hadn’t been around many Ekkie’s. Then after I met the other Ekkie’s in person I could see a huge difference in appearance. I finally understand what others have been talking about.
