I read an article once about a lady who had one (without even knowing what he was) but they found out and enrolled him in a breeding program.

In the movie Rio, they are kinda sorta basing the bird on a Hyacinth, but I wonder why they made the decision to not have the yellow in the face patches. I had written a letter once to the Caribbean Soul tee shirt company claiming the artistry on their T-shirts of the Scarlet Macaw was not authentic. Much to my surprise I got a letter back from Caribbean Soul's artist asking me to take several large pictures of Clifford from every angle as he did not have an authentic model for his artwork. I gladly did this for him and to my surprise he sent me six of their nicest shirts to add to my macaw shirt collection. So Clifford is really the model bird for Caribbean Soul!

Because the movie is based upon the Spix's Macaw, not the Hyacinth Macaw .

I can't find it now, but I actually read an interview with the creator of Rio. Within that interview the movie's creator explained why he decided to use the Spix's Macaw as the movie's main character.

It actually seems that Loro Parques Spix aviary could hold many more Spix Macaw's than the eight they currently have got.
