Pippin a GCC
Has anybody bought from him? Are his birds very tame? He seems to have a largeish busness and I know that sometimes that results in neglected or untame babies. I am looking to buy a conure early next year. Any suggestions for other GCC breeders near Orange County Ca would be welcome.

I think Omar's Exotic Birds has a farm where they breed babies, but because it's a full service store the babies are expensive.

Does anyone have any personal experience?

I've met Omar and he seems like a great guy! Never been to his stores, though! But I have heard good things about them.

Steve Garvin I've spoken with and he has a lot of knowledge on green cheek conure mutations and he's also working with some other Pyrrhura species.

I haven't gotten birds from either, but I wouldn't think you could go wrong with either place. I knew of another breeder who was located in the Davis area, however she has since moved to Washington. They haven't updated the information on their website, though.

Was he well tamed and socialized ?

Omar's birds have a lot of opportunities for socialization because they are out of their cages all day long and anyone can come in and pick them up and play with them. The stores are very clean and the birds look very healthy. Even so, it would probably not be my first choice if I were looking for a bird in OC because of the prices they charge. I guess it would depend on the bird. As long as you get a very young baby and she or he is hand fed, I'm not sure the socialization factor is super important. Your bird will have plenty of opportunities for socialization when you bring it home. I'm not sure that Steve Garvin hand feeds his babies ... he looks like a master breeder from his website who has a high interest in creating new mutation lines. So if you go with him, make sure the baby you get has been hand fed so it is imprinted to human hands.:green2:

I got my bird while working at petco, it was an impulse that couldn't be denied. I knew little but had to have one. I had a chance to handle a couple then when I got the overwhelming urge to get one we had four recently come in. I had the chance to handle all four, two wanted nothing to do with me and two were amazing. An impulse told me I wanted the peach but when I came in the next day she was gone. I got my bird and she's perfect short of being spoiled and screaming at me when I leave the room (still working on that).

I would imagine that you can pick up on a birds personality pretty quick no matter where it comes from. I'm pretty sure our conures were hand fed from wherever they came from but still. All 4 of them sold fast as did the rest when I worked there, even the ones that would bite rather then step up. If you want to work with a bird it will work with you in my experience
