The dreaded hormone monster hath returned...

Possible due to Human's flowing hormones more consistently and Parrot's having to deal with a yearly charge of them.

As with most other things, the effects difference greatly, individual to individual.

I cannot imagine a world in which Humans would be like exposed to a yearly charge of hormones. That would get ugly, and quickly.

We get more of the crazies than the rage. The strutting, flinging, bell ringing, fanning, eye pinning crazies. Sam walks around in that posture for a couple of minutes, then throws his head around like Linda Blair and calms down. Repeat every couple of hours until bedtime!

Oh ya lets not forget the strutting  Amy will do that also, with his "pontoons" out  ( that's what my mom used to call Amy's leg fluffies..don't ask me why lol) and the flashing eyes..and the beak will ever so slightly move as I talk to him, with his head poofed up.
I'm trying to keep Beebs away now. He is clueless and will land on Amys rope perches while Amy is inside his house, head bobbing like mad and more lunging at ME
I've come to the realization that Amy is just going to have to stay put for a few weeks in his own house until these urges pass. He HAS to be on BB's house or WITH BB no matter what.

I have been giving he who is hormonal a rather wide berth this past weeks with no repeat aggression incidents.

I just wanted to post yesterday while his featherbrite lamp was on (so really good lighting) he was up on his boing giving me quite the display and I have to say, his plumage is looking almost iridescent, like it has a shimmery sheen to it. He always has nice bright well groomed plumage, but he's literally glowing right now. Wonder if that is somehow due to the hormones too or was just how that bright 'sunlight' was hitting him?

Remember that process of molting is set to assure that they have their very best presentation of health prior to the start of Mating Season! Both the Girls and the Guys want their mate to know, you got the Best Sweetheart!

Call it the Best Photo Ops of the year time!

I personally like the Linda Blair imitation. The flying head is quite amusing. Sam also does the head under the wing flick multiple times while fanning and pinning and strutting. Quite a performance!

I swear Fidget has been hormonal. But hes only 2.5 years old and I thought hormones didnt hit till a few years from now? But yeah, all the stuff listed here. Changing moods, biting with very little warning, fluffy legs pin'd eyes etc. Just generally grumpy in a lot of ways. First time hes broken the skin with a bite! He was also backing up to me, (Umm, no) and acting like a grumpy old bird! He seems to be better now, which is nice!

Not worried about a chomp, just haven't had much luck getting photos on here after photo bucket and kinda not interested in using another online photo sharing service and having the same thing happen. But mayyyybeeee if I get a really good one of him doing one of his flashy displays:)

Well the big blue beastie has chomped through an entire block of Manu in this past week. Normally, it takes him months to get through on, nibbling here or there. He's not actually been eating it, just ripping it up because he's angry and horny I guess? Until the hormones pass, he'll be getting cheap cuttle bones to rip up in frustration, not another pricey block of clay meant to give him nutrients he'd get in nature.

In other news- it'll be nice, sunny and warm enough for his first excursion of 2018 tomorrow. Hopefully a ride in the car and trip to the bird store will distract him (in what way, I'm not sure. There are lady amazons at the bird store for him to wolf whistle at;)). I pulled out the pak-o-bird yesterday to steam clean and he was hanging off the celling (literally hanging off the roof of his cage like a bat) in excitement at the prospect of going out. Hormones+a bit of cabin fever a feisty bird doth make!

It's unlikely it's full on puberty/first surge of hormones, but his little body is probably starting to gear up. Around 4 is about average for amazons to get their first surge of hormones, but you may want to prepare yourself to see (and feel) it next breeding season when he's 3.5. Congratulations, Fidget is now a moody tween bird:D
