The cost of owning parrots

With 11 fids, cages, plus toys, fresh food, etc., I've already spent tens of thousands of dollars on my fids. Now we're building them an aviary made out of SS mesh which is going to put us out another 25+K dollars by the time it's all said and done.

Nothing but the best for my babies!

I'm sure your flock will love the aviary! Sounds great!

wait one.....are we also including shirts with the shoulder/arm seams ripped to shreds? because then I have to adjust my total.....

clearly I'm lucky in regards to shirts. Rio had a pair of glasses to attack at all times on my should which certainly kept his interest away from my shirt

Well im extremely lucky to have been able to re-home Enzo my CAG, she came with toys/cage/food/play stands/a few books and lots of advice for $0.00. I've spent quite a bit on her in the months that I have had her but nothing on the scale of some of you guys.

She has done quite a lot of damage to my house with chewing door frames etc so at some point when i *hopefully* can get her to chew other things then getting them replaced will be the biggest cost.

A funny cost was not noticing Enzo had got into my socks/underwear draw in my bedroom. I had to replace everything as within maybe 15 minutes not a single item was left without holes.

Oscar is okay with my regular glasses and my sunglasses, but he cannot stand my spare glasses. He climbs up to my shoulder, rips them off my face and flings them across the room if I'm not paying attention.

Just for Bonny.

Initial costs,

Cage -$500
Toys -$80 (she went through them in a week)

Runny costs per year
Pellets -$100 (two 25lb bags of roudybush)
Vet -$100
Misc Toys -$100-150
Wood to make toys -~$64 (worth of 2x4)
Wood dye -~$15
Drill bits -~$10
Saw blade -~$15

Nuts -unknown ~$50
Fruit and Veggies -Unknown she gets the same as we eat but it does add up.

You can recoup a bit of the loss by using the empty tissue box as a foraging toy. Likely shredded in less than 5 minutes! :D

(Prices in AUS dollars, I think it's about 0.7 of USD right now)

Remi + Cage = $1000
Parrot Toys + Special perches = $500
First vet visit + initial tests = $170
Second vet visit + Microchip = Estimate of $250
Hardware to build parrot stand = $80
Fruit & Veg (about 65% thrown away by me or her) = $200 for 4 months
Ire from Neighbours as I pinch their flowers and branches = ???

Watching as she ignores all her toys and gleefully pulls out some shredded paper I stuffed into a toilet roll = priceless.

* Disclaimer A - I compost most of the discarded fruit and veg so it's not completely wasted I guess.
* Disclaimer B - The neighbours haven't actually caught me pinching their flowers... yet.

This couple has given Mikey a second chance and the videos they have posted are absolutely amazing.
I'm glad they made this one about the responsibilities of having a macaw. They've done a nice job at covering the cost and needs in this video and just wanted to share.
Thought this was a good place to post the video and bumping this thread for some of the new members is probably a good idea.
We hope if people are considering adding a feathered friend to their family, do all of their their homework first.

Even though Mikey came into their family on an impulse, apparently they got him out of a bad situation. Looks like Mikey now has a very nice home and caring parronts :)

$200 on a cage for a single budgie. even budgies are pricey!
food is relatively inexpensive if you have a constant supply of fresh foods for you and the bird.
there is a pattern here. initially you'll spend a lot and everything else sort of falls into place.
get a job and get a bird!

Macaw vs Human child

A lot cheaper than a child,

Lives just about as long.
Sleeps 10-12 hours.
Takes their own bath.
Weighs about 3 lbs.
Easier to clean up after.
Doesn't eat much.
Starts talking at about 1 year.
Responds when talked to.
Doesnt need a zillion Dr visits.
Doesnt have much smell.
Is Empathetic.
Watches everything you do/
Learns very quickly.
Is repetitive with their skills.
They can fly.
They can balance on one foot while eating with the other.
They can sing.
They can sound the alarm.
Crap wipes up with a paper towel.
Very attentive.

They are free! Compared to the cost of a child..

What a deal!!

Haha i don't even want to think about it, one things definate they certainly are priceless ;). Love the idea for the thread though, should be a great resource for the future parrot owner!.:):yellow2:

I would humbly add that when necessary, you can cage your bird without the Protective Services being called!

Oef ... this is a GREAT thread!
I will try to remember it so I can throw it at every person who comes here "looking for a bird". Yup- you never notice how much a bird costs (overall) unless you really start to think about it...

:52:
(and I am on a budget/ so I really should)
<you can read dollar for the euroos - it does not really make that much of a difference>

*I had it sort of under controll, and then I got "a free macaw" ...
- her complimentary throwaway cage cost me 60 euro to transport home and chuck.
(If I had known it was that unbelievably crappy I would not have bothered- it was the worst cage I have ever seen! But I make a point of always let them keep their cage -if possible- during the settling in period so I forgot to ask for pictures beforehand.)
Oke, I had the macawcage already lying around (initially purchased for the grey) - it's a supersolid but also used model,
*it cost me about 300 euro years ago.
(that is including the transport and meeting a lovely breeder of Ekkies and Galah's.)
*CAV will top the 1000 euro, (more than my monthly check!)
this year anyway (bloodwork, chip/transponder, DNA, cultures, rinse&repeat several times on the bloodwork en cultures etc.etc.) for all of them.
*meds: I don't even want to know/ soo in denial about them
*first aid kit ... I though I had a good collection - since I've met you guys I found about all that other lovely helpfull stuff, so I have to bribe someone to smuggle it into the country for me ... :D
(I thought I was well stocked, but all those great options...)

*I just received my 'care package'- lots of great quality seedmixes, the best I could find and some treats, sprouting-mix and assorted beans for mush/birdybread etc, ... 18 kg of it -> 140 euro, I expect this batch to last me at least 4-5 months, but we shall see.
* Pellets + nutriberries are about 30 euro each month (estimate actually, I really should take notes) since the macaw joined the eating away-club
* Probably the same for the greens and fruit (or more...)

Don't even get me started on toys, gnawing branches, perches and damage to the house/clothes etc. -> well most of it (not the branches) are secondhand anyway ...so not too bad ;)
Oh the babywhipes, kitchentowels/paper, cleaningproducts -> just wait till they are on sale and get a bunch.
(I am not including the aviatorharnesses, the parrotproofing, nailfiles and toothbrushes )
that will probably be around 700 euro sofar / also another guesstemate :p
* I get the cage-paper for free ( the weekly 'flyers' from the supermarket turned out to be completely parrotsafe, so that helps a lot!) - I get to pick up the leftover-pile on saturday-afternoon.

the greys - whose adoptioncosts were 350 and 550, including crappy-throw-away-asap cages
+ vetwork about 375 euro a piece the first year,
secondhand huge cage for 400 euro including transport (they both love that cage, so they got to share it... they were welcome to keep their own of course ;) but somehow... they don't like way to small housing)
+
Oh and the mandatory CITES-papers: 30 euro per parrot
(well mandatory for the greys, since they are now CITES-1 birds, nobody really cares about the B&G being 'only' a CITES-2-b bird)

but those crazy birds in my life: priceless!
(and they probably still cost a lot less than all the useless anti-depressants etc. I went through and are far more effective in putting a smile on my face and a reason to get up in the mornings)

I read this thread and think im doing something wrong, Enzo's biggest expense was her cage, £400. I got her free of charge as I rehomed her, a vet visit cost me £80, she his due her second one now actually (12 months?). Her food and toys must have cost no more than £300 per year I think but haven't really kept tabs on it.

However if you factor in my destroyed clothing, maybe £500, the destroyed appliances, maybe £200, the destroyed wood work, maybe another £300 when I get them replaced...... it starts to add up.

I play World of Tanks a lot and so does my son, nephew.... I bet ive spent more on the game than I have on Enzo.

Great advice on the vet! Here is mine;

-the right diet is a whole lot cheaper than the consequences of a poor diet.

- take your bird to the vet once a year and GET GRAM STAINS AND BLOOD WORK! In fact, I NEVER leave the vet without gram stains. Those simple, inexpensive tests can mean the difference between $8 in antibiotics and $1000 in treatments and a dead bird anyway (yes this is a real case from my flock). Pay the extra money now to keep your bird healthy; it is SO WORTH IT!

I think ill get this done when I take Enzo to the vet, he didn't recommend any testing when I first took her. He was very happy with Enzo on the day, and surprised her weight was perfect for a CAG. She had just gotten past her egg laying episode so maybe that's why he didn't recommendtaking samples etc.

My vet btw, http://avianveterinaryservices.co.uk/
